There are studies that show a link between obesity and thyroid cancer. People who eat more raw fruits and vegetables have less thyroid cancer according to another study. One study found more follicular thyroid cancer in those who ate fish and cooked vegetables. Radiation exposure is linked to thyroid cancer. We know thyroid cancer rates are on the rise, but there are many theories about why this is happening. What do you think about these various theories regarding the increase in thyroid cancer? Fluoride!

We being mass-medicated without our permission with a toxic waste product of the fertilizer industry that hasn't a single solitary piece of clinical evidence proving it is safe to ingest on a regular basis. Were it not sold to municipalities to be added to public water systems, the producers of it would have to spend thousands each year to properly dispose of it according to toxic waste disposal laws, but what do we do? WE DRINK IT INSTEAD!!!!! How nuts is that?! Go to the Fluoride Action Network to learn more of this atrocity against man AND the environment as it is an environmental toxin too!!!!

Flouride and Soy

I know that Britian, Germany and Norway have banned flouride from the public water supply because they found a direct corelation with thyroid problems and flouride ingestion in children. Soy also causes many thyroid issues in many people but not in others. I believe some of this is genetic and some is environmental. We are individuals and should be looked at that way. Definately though, radiation, flouride, idodine and soy are controlable elements.

Immune systems weakened

I think there are many reasons why thyroid cancer is on the rise which are not realized. The combination of more than one variable increases your exposure to cancer. Ultimately, your immune system is affected. I believe impact to your thyroid in any way (motor vehicle accident, virus, radiation, pollution) lowers your immune system, which then makes a person vulnerable to thyroid cancer. For example, I suffered whiplash and a month later got a serious virus infection where I had difficulty breathing and swallowing. I know my immune system was low at the time as I struggled through my day. I feel everything is connected. So, even if it is not an event or environmental conditions that directly cause thyroid damage, I believe the combination of factors trigger autoimmune reactions which aggravate the thyroid and lead to cancer.

Thyroid cancer = nuclear testing fallout

Government studies on nuclear testing fallout concern the effects of nuclear testing in Nevada and the absorption of radioactive iodine from these tests 1951-1992. There are maps in the 1997 National Cancer Institute study coordination by the National Institutes of Health. They only studied radioactive iodine 131 in the fallout, because they thought thyroid disease and thyroid cancer were minor and easily cured. Other radioisotopes from fallout, which blanketed the entire country, can mimic calcium and cause leukemia, bone cancer, brain cancer, and so forth. I wrote a book about this, "American Ground Zero: The Secret Nuclear War," [The MIT Press; Random House paperback] which has a map to indicate all the places in the USA that were exposed to at least one nuclear fallout cloud. It's an eye-opener, and all of us downwind of the test site should hold the government accountable. I Was Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer

Maybe there's an increase because they send all thyroid cancer patients home after treatment because it's expensive to hospitalize them. They're full of radioactive iodine, which is known to cause thyroid cancer in others, causing a cascading effect in the community. My dad had thyroid cancer 20 years ago and came home right after treatment.

Radiation

My endocrinologist told me my thyroid and parathyroids (both removed) were caused by radiation tretments I received for chronic respiratory infections when I was a child. A friend of mine also had her thyroid removed from radiation treatments for acne as a teenager. Is there a natural repkacement for thyroid hormone?

Overexposure to Radiation

I can only surmise that the reason thyroid cancer is on the rise is radiation. For me, while growing up in the 60's and 70's (pre-fluoride), I unfortunately had the worst teeth in the state. My mother took me to the dentist 2 times/year, and I recall getting X-rays every time and with no lead blanket at all. I then grew to be a teenager with the worst acne in the state. My mother took me to a dermatologist who put me under what I assumed was some kind of sun lamp countless times. Fast forward to my 40's and I'm diagnosed with papillary cancer. Nowadays, yes, X-rays emit less radiation than years ago but there is so much more radiation in our environment and atmosphere. Some people may be able to process this stuff in their bodies better than others who end up getting cancer.

Autoimmune Connection?

For years I went to doctors trying to find answers for mood swings, weight fluctuations, menstrual irregularities, blood sugar issues, abdominal bloating etc.to no avail. Finally, someone tested for thyroid antibodies & found a problem. A small nodule was discovered after a throat exam. I was sent me to an ENT. An ultrasound confirmed a small nodule that did not warrant a biopsy. No thyroid medication was prescribed because my TSH was still within range. The anti-antibody level was in the 40's. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Ten months later my symptoms are more unbearable. My primary doctor did another antibody test & discovered that my levels were now in the 60's & prescribed 25 mcg of Synthroid. A follow up a couple weeks later showed me climbing to 100+! I went back to the ENT. After another biopsy showed no growth of nodule, the dotor still didn't "feel" a biopsy was necessary. I demanded a biopsy which showed CANCER!

X-rays

After my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer two years ago I became more aware of the risk of exposure to X-rays. With this heightened awareness, I have noticed that care is not being taken to protect the neck region most of the time with the protective bib for dental X-rays. Most of the emphasis by the technicians is on protecting the chest area. I am not familiar with any guidelines being given to the general public on how many X-rays are safe to have at the dentist with out being over-exposed.

Val

I know why it's on the rise in New Mexico. It's the nuclear weapons program. That is how I got mine. So did my 2 daughters-in-law, and three of my boys have thyroid cancer or thyroid disorders.

Say NO to Fluoride

My adopted daughter recently had fluoride poisoning due to a fluoride supplement gel prescribed by her dentist. Her hair fell out in clumps, and her thyroid functioning was severely affected. Fluoride is absorbed by the thyroid and pinial glands. I believe, I too, suffered from flouride poisoning. I suffered from hair loss from childhood (flouride treatments at the dentist, flouride in the water, flouride toothpaste, etc.) and papillary and follicular thyroid cancer as an adult. More research NEEDS to be done in this area. Traditional doctors and dentists I have shared this with vehemently deny that flouride could even possibly be a cause. Our environmental doctor was the only one who immediately diagnosed flouride poisoning, and treated my daughter with iodine. Thank God, she recovered after a few weeks of treatment.

cancer from cancer treatment!!

I had breast cancer in 2003 and had 33 rounds of radiation. Same side. They always had me turn my neck to the left while I received the treatments. Straight shot of the radiation on my neck. Now I have papillary thyroid cancer. This is ridiculous! Somehting needs to be done and soon with all the breast cancer out there.

Jodie Flynn

I am 40 yrs old female, live in coastal Australia. I am fit, healthy, active, my correct weight and have no family history of thyroid illness. I have never been exposed to Radiation or have eaten soy products. Yet 12 months ago I was diagnosed with thyroid and lymph cancer. I underwent total thyroid removal, a right and left side lymph dissection and 2 courses of RAI treatment. There are a lot of theories about this condition but no evidence supporting any of them. I would love to hear from anyone with some tips about how they manage to work and running a household when they are so tired. Also my thyroid cancer has caused me to loose a lot of weight yet my specialists can not give me a reason why this is occurring as I am eating better than I ever have.

Thca

I don't know why a rise has occurred. I assumed it was improved technology and screening opportunities. My exposure has been in the 60's as a nurse looking after women with radium implants. Also, as a child, I lived on a farm where chemicals were used to dip sheep and cull the rabbit population. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, and now am being investigated for a pheochromocytoma. I have a neck dystonia and head tremor. No idea if any of these are related or just the luck of the draw.

Australian causes

TV health show this week reported 1990s change in dairy farmers equipment sterilisation from iodine to chlorine cut iodine intake in population and has increased iodine deficiency problems. www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/stories/2005/.../1496781.htm
