From the article: Thyroid Cancer Rates are Increasing
There are studies that show a link between obesity and thyroid cancer. People who eat more raw fruits and vegetables have less thyroid cancer according to another study. One study found more follicular thyroid cancer in those who ate fish and cooked vegetables. Radiation exposure is linked to thyroid cancer. We know thyroid cancer rates are on the rise, but there are many theories about why this is happening. What do you think about these various theories regarding the increase in thyroid cancer? X-rays
- After my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer two years ago I became more aware of the risk of exposure to X-rays. With this heightened awareness, I have noticed that care is not being taken to protect the neck region most of the time with the protective bib for dental X-rays. Most of the emphasis by the technicians is on protecting the chest area. I am not familiar with any guidelines being given to the general public on how many X-rays are safe to have at the dentist with out being over-exposed.

- I know why it's on the rise in New Mexico. It's the nuclear weapons program. That is how I got mine. So did my 2 daughters-in-law, and three of my boys have thyroid cancer or thyroid disorders.

Say NO to Fluoride
- My adopted daughter recently had fluoride poisoning due to a fluoride supplement gel prescribed by her dentist. Her hair fell out in clumps, and her thyroid functioning was severely affected. Fluoride is absorbed by the thyroid and pinial glands. I believe, I too, suffered from flouride poisoning. I suffered from hair loss from childhood (flouride treatments at the dentist, flouride in the water, flouride toothpaste, etc.) and papillary and follicular thyroid cancer as an adult. More research NEEDS to be done in this area. Traditional doctors and dentists I have shared this with vehemently deny that flouride could even possibly be a cause. Our environmental doctor was the only one who immediately diagnosed flouride poisoning, and treated my daughter with iodine. Thank God, she recovered after a few weeks of treatment.

cancer from cancer treatment!!
- I had breast cancer in 2003 and had 33 rounds of radiation. Same side. They always had me turn my neck to the left while I received the treatments. Straight shot of the radiation on my neck. Now I have papillary thyroid cancer. This is ridiculous! Somehting needs to be done and soon with all the breast cancer out there.

Jodie Flynn
- I am 40 yrs old female, live in coastal Australia. I am fit, healthy, active, my correct weight and have no family history of thyroid illness. I have never been exposed to Radiation or have eaten soy products. Yet 12 months ago I was diagnosed with thyroid and lymph cancer. I underwent total thyroid removal, a right and left side lymph dissection and 2 courses of RAI treatment. There are a lot of theories about this condition but no evidence supporting any of them. I would love to hear from anyone with some tips about how they manage to work and running a household when they are so tired. Also my thyroid cancer has caused me to loose a lot of weight yet my specialists can not give me a reason why this is occurring as I am eating better than I ever have.

Thca
- I don't know why a rise has occurred. I assumed it was improved technology and screening opportunities. My exposure has been in the 60's as a nurse looking after women with radium implants. Also, as a child, I lived on a farm where chemicals were used to dip sheep and cull the rabbit population. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, and now am being investigated for a pheochromocytoma. I have a neck dystonia and head tremor. No idea if any of these are related or just the luck of the draw.

Australian causes
- TV health show this week reported 1990s change in dairy farmers equipment sterilisation from iodine to chlorine cut iodine intake in population and has increased iodine deficiency problems. www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/stories/2005/.../1496781.htm

Radiation?
- I had to go in for radiation treatments after breast cancer, and I asked the doctor about the radiation levels. The doctor told me that was irrelevant. It was whatever the doctor ordered. I was mad, so I asked for one of the radiation exposure buttons the nurses have, and they said no, why should you? I had 33 radiation treatments to my entire body, THAT's WHY! They were about six inches from my thyroid.

Damage from many sources
- So many of these things mentioned probably play a part...too many harmful chemicals loose in our environment AND our food. Personally, I believe the mercury in my amalgam fillings caused my Hashimoto's, coupled, perhaps with my handling polycarbonate in my work for 15 years.

Endemic radiation
- So has anyone given an honest look at the wind patterns that scattered radiation from the open air testing in Nevada and New Mexico? According to some sources, that radiation was spread all over the United States. I know that when I was diagnosed 9 years ago, my surgeon told me that there was an epidemiological bubble of cancer cases for people who were born between 1952 and 1962. It would be interesting to see if the numbers bear that out.

Increase in CT Scans
- X-rays are a proven cause of some thyroid cancers. CT scans of the head and chest each often irradiate the neck too. The x-ray dose from CT scans is equivalent to many old-fashioned chest films. And we are using CT scans at the drop of a hat. So I believe Americans are receiving more radiation than in the past, from medical x-rays, CT scans and also fluoroscopy, when the x-ray beam stays ON to watch threading of a catheter or instrument in real-time. X-rays are a uniquely powerful cause of unrepairable damage (mutations) to the DNA molecules that tell each cell how to operate properly. X-rays do not just create a few extra free radicals in an irradiated cell. X-rays (and nuclear pollutants) can deliver biologically unnatural amounts of energy inside the DNA double helix, and these mini-bombs cause complex damage that cells cannot always repair correctly.

Soy in our Diet
- Soy is a known endocrine disruptor. In some studies, if researchers want to induce thyroid cancer in rats, they feed them soy. I suspect that the epidemic of thyroid cancer may be related to how much soy we eat in this country.

Nuclear Plants
- I think nuclear power plants give off radiation. I live between two locations and thyroid cancer is epidemic around these plants. We need clean energy, not with the heavy water spillage into our lakes and rivers. I'd like to see the nuclear plants shut down now.

fluoride
- I am stunned to see no mention of fluoridation of water as a primary cause of thyroid dysfunction in America. I say America, because Europe had the sense and good science to stop this mass medication more than a decade ago. An excellent read is "The Fluoride Deception" by Chris Bryson.

Pollution
- In most - if not all - of the research done on the thyroid gland, perhaps the single theme that recurs is the overall sensitivity of the thyroid to so many factors. With the overexposure of magnetic waves from cell phones, microwaves, satellite radios and TV's, that may be part of it. Nuclear waste and accidents spread and effect the entire world when they occur. We live in an increasingly toxic world, and at the time when the natural ingredients found in food should act as a sort of buffer, we find diets rich in refined sugars, bleached starches, meats full of hormones and antibiotics, and poor in fruits and vegetables and lack of exercise combine for a deadly cocktail. I'm not on board for man-made global warming, but stopping pollution is a no-brainer for the health of all.
