Thyroid Cancer and Weight Gain

I had my thyroid removed due to cancer 4 years ago. I have been taking Synthroid since then. During the past year, I have been gaining weight even though I exercise for one hour daily and joined Weight Watchers. I haven't lost weight in 5 weeks. Does anyone have had success with this problem?

I Have Hashimoto's Disease

I have had Hashimoto's disease for 2 years, and I was diagnosed after having my daughter and having postrum cardiomopy. I just went to the doctor, and I have a goiter in my neck. The doctor says it should have been gone after 2 yrs. If it's not Hashimoto's-related what else could it be? I'm only 24 yrs old and I don't know what to expect.

Thyroidectomy/Menopause/Weight Gain

I've had a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago at age 47. Actually, I had half my thyroid and a large goiter removed since I was born with only half a thyroid. The things I experienced as a kid now make sense since being diagnosed 25 years ago with hypothyroidism. My problem now is that after all these years, I am now going through night sweats and weight gain. No matter how little I eat and watch both by calorie and carbohydrate intake, I'm still gaining. Now add menopause into the mix, and I feel bloated and sluggish all the time! I am taking 100 mcg with a TSH range of 4.0. Does anyone out there have any suggestions/advice??

Trying to Get Information about Thyroid

I just found out that I have an underactive thyroid and probably would have never found out if the doctor's nurse hadn't ask me about my labs. The doctor never looked at them and hasn't told me anything to expect from this or what the medicine will do. I wish I had the money to see a doctor that will take the time to explain things to me. I have been having headaches that makes my hands, arms, and mouth/tongue go numb. Is there anyone that knows if this is caused from thyroid problems?I also have gained over 100 lbs. Does anyone have any information for me?

Hello Robin

I had my thyroid removed in 2008. You need to take your thyroid medicine every morning as soon as you wake up. If you miss a day it, can really play with your mind and your body. It does not matter how many mcg you are taking as long as everything is working well. You may need to to increase your Synthroid in the winter or after six weeks of taking Synthroid every day. Check with your doctor. If I don't take my medicine properly, it makes me depressed. Make yourself do it.

Thyroid irritation after viral infection

Three years ago I didn't know where my thyroid glands were. After a viral infection, I noticed a swelling on my left lobe. The sonogram showed that I had a nodule on the left thyroid. The swelling went down after the fluid was taken out of it. Three years later,a couple of weeks ago I had the same infection and the swelling on the thyroid came back. I am 52 years old.I think that I might need a surgery. Do you know any experienced thyroid specialists in Brooklyn? I'll appreciate any kind of information. How about Coney Island Hospital?

Hodgkins Survivor Needs Help

I had Hodgkins lymphoma 19 years ago with radiation to my neck area. After treatment I was put on 300 mcg of Synthroid. I have continued this treatment. However, I have not had my levels checked in four years. I have lost 15 lbs. since then. I went for a routine blood work and I am severely anemic with a platelet count of 1105. I am being tested for leukemia this week, but I am beginning to think I am on too high of a dose of thyroid. Has anyone been through this? I am scared.

Hello

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2004. I had my thyroid totally removed. I struggle everyday to get out of bed and take care of my family. I take 150 mcg of Synthroid/day and sometimes I forget to take it. I suffer from depression also. Could this be a side affect of my medication or not having a thyroid?

Approach, but Sometimes with Caution

This site has been really helpful. I am thankful to have come across it in the many years that I've struggled with a multinodular goiter, Hashimoto's, and, more recently, thyroid cancer. I think there's an important caution for people who are recently diagnosed or facing a new surgery or treatment: Take other people's negative experiences with a grain of salt. Personally, I had to stop reading the forums on most thyroid websites including this one, leading up to my total thyroidectomy because I realized that it wasn't healthy for me to only acknowledge and learn about negative experiences with weight gain and other symptoms following my total thyroidectomy and treatment with Synthroid after thryoid cancer. Personally, I am thankful for the knowledge these sites have given me, but I would caution anyone in a sensitive place to be aware that there are many different experiences and outcomes, even positive ones. Be informed, but keep perspective.

Natural Thyroid Hormones on Yahoo Groups

I was fortunate to find the Natural Thyroid Hormones (NTH) on Yahoo Groups. That group saved my life. I had frees below the lab range & a normal TSH. I was so very sick and had severe body pain. They taught me how to read the labs and how to find a good doctor. I am forever in their debt.

Facebook Fan

I love checking in at the About thyroid forum. There are so many helpful people who are way ahead of me (I was just diagnosed a few months ago) in terms of their knowledge and experience, so I just love that they're so willing to share their advice and help. I also like to pop over to Facebook and check things out there sometimes!
