What Important Life Lesson Thyroid Disease Taught You

I have learned many lessons from my thyroid disease, but among the most important is that I deserve to be taken care of. And since I have spent most of my life taking care of everyone else around me, I also have learned that I have the best possible caregiver who can devote herself to making sure all of my needs are met, and that I live my life in an impeccable way. I can't think of anyone who I would rather have devoted to my care than me!

How Has This Lesson Changed Your Life?

My journey with my illness has been a long and sometimes bumpy road, and I have been tossed about quite a bit. But I have come to a new and wonderful place in my life where I no longer feel afraid to speak up for myself. I no longer place everyone else's needs ahead of my own, and I have changed my concept of myself and what I deserve. When I am angry, I say so (appropriately) and when I have something to say, I say it. My thyroid (living in my throat, as it does) has been holding on to so much over the years, and I am trying to ease the burden on it, and on my heart by being true to myself and speaking the truth of my experience to those around me. It's wonderful.

Advice

  • Don't give up, even when doctor after doctor won't take your symptoms or your illness seriously.
  • Continue searching for the answers that work for you and that serve to enhance your life.
  • Dig deep. Don't be afraid to look within yourself for some of the underlying issues that you can explore to help you grow stronger from your experiences.
  • If your thyroid disorder is caused by an autoimmune response, get treatment for that! Don't just accept the pills and then continue to suffer with symptoms. There are doctors out there who will take your autoimmune disease seriously. Solving that takes much more than a pill.
