What Important Life Lesson Thyroid Disease Taught You

I kept digging for answers. Don't ever give up. Don't go into denial and don't get complacent. Living with thyroid and adrenal disease is a lifelong battle.

How Has This Lesson Changed Your Life?

I didn't take for granted that one person or one doctor has all of the answers. No matter how good they are, they don't have all of them. This disease is too complex and has too many variables. Once you think you have one thing figured out, another problem may rear it's ugly head. It is a lifelong battle, so the more you can learn on your own, the better patient you will be, and the more your doctor will be able to help you. Also, if you find a doctor you like, they still may not be doing all they can for you. I found a great doctor who was treating my hypothyroidism, but when I came down with adrenal fatigue on top of my thyroid disease, he told me, "There is nothing else I can do for you, you have to get your stress level under control." Well, it is pretty impossible to control stress. Fortunately, I stay active on Mary's website, the STTM site and the Facebook sites, so I was able to find myself another doctor, and I am doing much better. So, even if a doctor you admire and respect tells you something like this, don't give in, and don't give up.

Advice

  • If you are going to a doctor who tells you: 1) it's all in your head; 2) you need antidepressants; 3) you need weight loss medication; or 4) thyroid disease is easy to treat because you only have to take a pill everyday and you'll be fine, run from that doctor's office and don't ever look back.
