Tell Us About Your Thyroid Condition and Your Fatigue
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1986. I've been a low-energy person since my teens. I spent 13 years in a cult, where I spent many years working long hours, and sleeping little. I think it was through that experience that I learned the difference between endurance and energy. I tell folks now that I may not have a lot of energy, but I have developed a great deal of endurance. One is a matter of metabolism, the other is a matter of will. And while I may not be a type-A person, I can work more productively for longer periods than most anyone I know.
What Are You Doing to Deal With Your Fatigue
I found a new doctor who listened carefully to my history and symptoms. She ordered extensive lab tests and is working with me to correct an almost non-existent level of Vitamin D and incorporating T3 with my Synthroid. I restarted my exercise program (weight training combined with walking); however, being a realist, I don't expect to lose weight. I just decided I didn't want to be a frail little old lady in 20 years; my goal is to gain strength. I haven't seen much of an increase in energy yet, but only just started the Vitamin D and T3, so we'll see. I also got a new mattress (natural latex)...no more box springs! Haven't slept so well in years!
Advice
- Research: read everything you can about your problem (thanks to Mary Shomon for her books and blogs!)
- If your current doctor isn't listening, find a new one who will
- Get more and better sleep (a new mattress helps!)
- Have faith in yourself: Your ability to endure and persevere will help you find the strength you need to exercise, to find solutions, to just make it through the day.
