My Surgery Story
I had a complete thyroidectomy in June of 2008 for multiple cold nodules on one side. Sadly, I was talked into having the 'normal' functioning side removed too. If I knew then what I know now, I would have demanded a partial thyroidectomy instead.
About Your Scar
I was told by the surgeon that I should be pleased that he only made a 2 inch scar rather than the typical 3-5 inch scar. I am certainly glad that he opted for the shorter version, but there is literature out there advocating even smaller incisions.
I had a couple of blisters form along the incision that the surgeon opted to squeeze with forceps -- painful -- rather than aspirate with a syringe, but other than that, the healing process was unremarkable. It took several months before it stopped looking so angry and red.
My scar is the first thing I see now when I look at myself in the mirror and I am always surprised that it isn't as noticeable to people that don't know I had surgery.
It does get better.
Advice
- I used vitamin E oil almost immediately after surgery.
