My Surgery Story
8 years ago I found out that I had hypothyroid disease and also a tumor on my left side of my thyroid that needed to be removed. When I had the surgery I was afraid but when I woke up from surgery, I was surprised how fast it went and that I did not feel too bad. I think I had a little sore throat for a few days but I did not even need the pain meds that they sent home with me. I believe I stayed in the hospital overnight the day of my surgery and went home the next day. After having my surgery, they tested my thyroid that they removed and determined that I indeed had Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
About Your Scar
I was afraid at first to look at my scar and when I did I did not like it! I had hoped that it would fade in time I even tried putting various things on it once the scar healed like creams and even olive oil. I didn't work, and I still have the scar and it is there for everyone to see. I can not cover it either because I can not stand to have anything around my neck. Not even a scarf, turtle neck, or anything even close to being around my neck. I miss wearing turtle necks in the winter under my sweaters. My scar has faded some over the years but still can see it pretty well. I hate it! its embarrassing when people look at you and wonder what happened to you. I just try to forget that it is even there.
Advice
- I wish now that I would have told my doctor just to remove all of my thyroid while he was in there in the first place because now I have to go back to have the other half removed. I hate having surgery no matter what it is for but now facing another one. I would say that if you are facing surgery to have part of it out ask about going ahead and having it all removed. But that is for you and your doctor to decide.
