The only diet that ever worked (and worked extremely well) was the Dr. Simeon Protocol using HCG.
From 2000 to 2009, I've done 15 diets; all of them working for awhile & then tapering off (I now know it was due to my thyroid and adrenals, but was extremely frustrated at the time not having this diagnosis). I exercise religiously, hired a personal trainer, eat ALL organic, log my food into a balance log on the computer, had my metabolism measured, change up my work outs regularly, lift weights & do cardio 5 days a week including a core yoga class for stress, reduce/eliminate environmental toxins as much as possible & followed the various diets to the letter - with very little results going from 233 lbs to 214 lbs, losing 19 lbs in 9 years. I got down to 214 lbs through sheer white knuckle determination of pushing myself (with very slow & limited results) as my faulty thyroid & adrenal failure kept pushing back. I look back and wonder why I didn't quit. The ONLY thing that worked all the way to my goal (EVEN WITH MY FAULTY THYROID) was HCG.
Back in 2002, my lab blood work shows my thyroid was a problem, but the doctor did not consider my TSH out of range even though the new lower range should have caught it. It was borderline high with the old/outdated range, but I wasn't diagnosed & treated until April 2010. I am currently taking timed release T3 & am still increasing dosage to get my TSH into the best range for me to get my metabolism functioning optimally. I am just starting to see my TSH decline after 4 mon of slowly increasing the bioidentical T3.
The HCG diet worked each time. I did 3 - 30 day rounds of the diet and lost a total of 60 pounds. I went from 214 lbs to 154 (I am 5'10", 46 years old, female). The HCG Diet worked so very well THYROID PROBLEM & ALL.

It is effective thyroid issue or not. Eating clean, organic, healthy & have thyroid issue optimized & adrenals functioning properly, hormones balanced, & any insulin or leptin resistance corrected TO KEEP the weight off. A healthy carb, low sugar, grass fed meats, Omega 3 balanced diet is best.
Cons for Thyroid Patients?
No cons, the actual diet part is a very clean diet with lean meats, specific fruits and vegies and doesn't involve any thyroid resistant foods or supplements.
