JEERS: Bill Law and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE)

Big Jeers in 2005 to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), and their president, Dr. Bill Law. They operate in their own universe -- one that doesn't appear to include patients.

First, they can't get their members to agree as far as the TSH normal range. Come on guys! If you're claiming that TSH tests are THE ONLY WAY TO DIAGNOSE THYROID DISEASE then at least agree on a range! Some think the range is the old .5 to 5.0; some think it's is the new .3 to 3.0, recommended since 2002.( "TSH Reference Range Wars.").

Then they write a letter to CBS, claiming that Dr. Steven Hotze is wrong regarding thyroid diagnosis, use of Armour Thyroid, and other key issues. They claim that only "solid scientific evidence" should be presented. Funny enough, their "official expert opinions" aren't backed up by "solid scientific evidence." When I wrote, asking them to provide that evidence to the patient community -- they refused! ("Dear AACE: You Still Haven't Answered Our Questions!")

Then, flush with money from Synthroid, they mount their "Thyroid Awareness Month Campaign" to "Target Your Numbers," failing to mention that no one AGREES on the numbers. Again, it's clear that "The Endocrinologists at AACE Are Not In Touch With Reality." I've wrote to them (1/13/06 Letter to AACE) to ask them how patients can target numbers no one agrees on, but I'm not holding my breath for an answer.

So much for your responsiveness to the patient community, AACE...
