Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, President of Argentina, was diagnosed in December of 2011 with papillary thyroid carcinoma, the most common form of thyroid cancer. This type of cancer, when caught before it has spread, as it is in Fernandez's case, has a 20-year survival rate of 99% after treatment. Treatment is typically surgery to remove the gland.
