Do You Know More Than Your Doctor?

Sure, there are times it feels like you know more than your doctor. And when you have a particular disease, you are often reading and researching with a passion. You may get to that new issue of the New England Journal before your doctor does, and you may have time to read every page from the 200-page report on complementary medicine just released from the NIH -- the one that your doctor missed.

But the bottom line is that your doctor spends years in medical school, years as an intern and resident, and years in practice. Your doctor often has the bigger picture, and can work as your partner, to help you integrate new information, and help work with you to make good decisions about your health.

But if you go in to every appointment as if you're challenging your doctor to a duel, or trying to prove him or her wrong, your doctor will naturally get his or her back up, and may dig in and become resistant to your ideas. You'll end up acting just like egotistical doctors who think they know more than anyone else!

A BETTER APPROACH? Instead of assuming you know more than your doctor, assume that you and your doctor are working together, collaborating, and helping each other. Approach your doctor with respect, as a colleague in the "project" of getting you well, and you'll have better results.
