New Guidelines Released Re: Thyroid Disease & Pregnancy
Back in the 1990s, I recommended that any woman contemplating pregnancy get a thyroid test. And that women with a family or personal history of thyroid or autoimmune disease absolutely be tested before and after conception. And that hypothyroid women be tested frequently throughout the pregnancy, because thyroid dosage requirements were likely to increase. And that thyroid antibody testing should be part of a fertility workup, and that antibodies may require treatment to ensure fertility and a healthy pregnancy. It seems that the endocrinologists have come around to sharing this opinion, as you'll read in announcements made this week by the American Thyroid Association. (May 13, 2004)

Is Thyroid.com's Richard Guttler Becoming Unhinged?
If you want to read something that would be funny if it weren't so sad, check out Richard Guttler's latest “newsletter.” Apparently, the self-proclaimed thyroidologist did not appreciate his site getting an accurate but less-than-favorable mention in my recent review, The Top Thyroid Sites: Pros & Cons. His solution? He's made the main article a list he calls "Top Ten Things Wrong With Mary Shoman." (It’s ShomOn, actually, Dr. G.!) In any case, while David Letterman need not fear competition, I know that you’ll want to find out more about the antics of this infamous fellow! (March 20, 2004)

Is Your Doctor as Clueless as Dr. Peter Gott?
Dr. Peter Gott has a United Media syndicated Q&A medical/health column that appears in newspapers around the country. Last week, however, Gott tackled an issue for which he was utterly unprepared: thyroid disease. Gott included at least three glaring errors in his discussion of thyroid drugs, and patients need to be aware of the misinformation this doctor is disseminating about thyroid drugs. In the column, a reader took issue with Dr. Gott's insistence that patients should only take levothyroxine, and not Armour Thyroid, and asked him to revisit his recommendation. Gott begins the error-filled response with "Sorry, but I won't." Read more now. (March 20, 2004)

Why Your Doctor Thinks I'm Crazy: Part 2
Excerpts from some of the hundreds of emails and forum posts from furious patients who can't believe that doctors are making fun of patients and calling me "crazy!". (January 29, 2004)

Why Your Doctor Thinks I'm Crazy
I was talking with a reporter the other day, who is interviewing various doctors for an article on thyroid disease. The reporter said that in speaking with some of the mainstream endocrinologists, one of the doctors had said "Mary Shomon is crazy." One very well-known East Coast endocrinologist started off an endocrinology meeting with a David Letterman "Top 10" style list of "The Top Ten Signs You Have a Crazy Thyroid Patient on Your Hands." Number 2 on the list was "She walks in carrying a copy of Mary Shomon's book" was actually number 2 on the list! Hearing that doctors say I'm "crazy," and that they dread patients who walk in carrying copies of my book is the BEST thing anyone could tell me. Because that means that I'm doing my job as a patient advocate...and the endocrinologists are taking notice!! But let's take a look at some of the reasons why some doctors say I'm crazy, while at the same time, millions of visits are made each month to my websites, and hundreds of thousands of copies of my books, guides and newsletters are in the hands of thyroid patients around the nation and the world...
