Utage: Alternative Treatment Success for Graves' Disease

I have a success story. Two years ago, in June '98, I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease and started taking PTU after an allergic reaction to Tapazole. Then, last year, I encountered a Japanese alternative remedy for thyroid disease. It takes some time, but it was pretty simple: Warm up (I used hot water) a Yam Cake (or 'Kon nyaku' found in Asian markets) and keep it on the thyroid for 3 minutes and then cool it (I used an ice pack) for one minute. Repeat 3 to 5 times daily. It's also good to cool the spleen for 10 minutes.

After 5 months of trying this remedy, my TSH and T4 were good, so my endo took me off the PTU. I went back and got tested once every 2 months after that, and last week was my second visit after going off the medication and my results were normal (T4 was 7.0, T3 was 89, and TSH was 0.7). I feel great too, with no symptoms whatsoever!! My endo said that it's most likely that I'm in remission and I don't have to get tested for another 4 months.

I realize that this is not a sure method and I might have just been lucky. Maybe it also helped that I stayed off caffeine (which I think I read in one of your articles). Or it might have been other factors. However, it's certain that I am better and so I thought I'd share this with you.

I also would like to say thank you so much because I truly have been learning a lot from your web page and newsletters, and also got a lot of encouragement from you as well as others on the bulletin board. I wish you well.
