MKH: "Diet and Exercise are Critical!"
Last September during a routine physical my Doctor discovered I was
"borderline" hypothyroid. I realize that there are many varying opinions
regarding this diagnosis, one of which is to treat or not to treat. I
was confused and somewhat scared (not knowing really anything about this
disease) an stumbled on this site. I learned that this illness can be
very debilitating and cause major problems in people's lives.
Before this discovery I basically thought that thyroid disease is just
something that can be taken care of by popping a pill in your mouth every
day......Boy was I wrong....People with this illness struggle and do
battle with it for long periods of time (some never ending) until they
reach a point that makes them feel well again.
Fortunately for me, this was caught very early with minimal symptoms. My
Doctor and I chose to TRY and treat it naturally and see if there was any
improvement. Luckily through dietary changes, supplements, exercise and
stress reduction it seems to have worked (for now anyway). My TSH level
came down from a 5.9 to a 4 in two months.
I don't know if this downward trend will continue but hopefully so. I
realize that my thyroid was "overworked and not functioning properly for
my tsh to get high, so there is always the possibility that it will always
be weak. But time will tell and I will continue to keep an eye on it.
More importantly I learned through this site alot about supplements, many
of which I incorporated into my regimen. Also about low carbohydrate
diets, which is what i chose, and what makes me feel good, and so many
valuable things that help me and continue to help me try to keep this
under control.
I also learned what tests to "insist" not ask the doctor to perform and
this too was very helpful.
I tend to push the exercise part of my regimen, not to offend anyone but
just because I think it is a very major important part of life, not just
for those with suffer with thyroid disease. However, when you do have a
sluggish thyroid you need to give it a "shove" every day.
I just would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone on this board
for all your "valuable" thoughts and comments and for sharing your very
personal experiences with me and making me more informed and knowledgeable
about this terrible disease.
Thanks Mary and all of you on the board for all of your input. I will
continue to read and learn from you all.
