I am re-reading some of the old articles, but in fact would like to
respond
to your question about how hypothyroid people are feeling after taking
Maca.
I ordered the Maca (and the 2 teas, have tried the Cat's Claw tea), and
started taking about 4 capsules a day. Originally this was all at once
with
breakfast, but then I thought to split it up and take 3 in the morning and
1
at night, when I take my second estrogen dose (I went into early
menopause
in my late thirties, and a year ago at age 43 I started taking 'natural'
estrace and prometrium through my endo.
This doctor had also put me on her own version of the low carbo diet,
Dr.
Schwarzbein (she wrote a book, can't remember the name, but it's all
about
insulin resistance). But on her diet, even though in general I tried to
stick with it, I was having terrible sugar cravings, and started being
addicted to chocolate, I had to have some (dark chocolate, less
sugar...)
every day. And of course, the holidays and vacations, I backslid. So,
over
the course of a year, I lost about 10 pounds, about 2 pounds a month,
but
then put back on almost 5. And I was losing the battle over sugar. My
intestines felt so much better on the low-carb diet, and I could feel
the
effects of eating any sugar (would get sleepy), but I couldn't stop on
my
own.
In August of this year, I finally convinced my Dr. to test and prescribe
T3
for me (Cytomel, on top of the Synthroid), although I think it was a
very
minimal dose (she has some aversion to T3 supplementation, I think
because
she is afraid of the effects on the adrenals?). I felt almost
immediately
better taking T3 (although I started taking it on vacation, so I was
already
feeling much more happy and relaxed from that). I had more enthusiasm
for
life, even after getting back to work. At the same time, I started
taking
Selenium supplements (nasty smelling!), you can see your influence
there...
so between the 2 of them, I was finally starting to feel more myself
(and
remembering how I used to be, before Hashimoto's).
Well, finally, in October this year, I ordered and started the Maca.
After
about a week, where I was trying to gauge my energy levels (I thought
this
was where I'd see improvement...), I noticed that I had stopped eating
sweets. In fact, even if they're there, I don't eat them. I have NEVER
been this way before. I am able to take up where I had left off with my
low-carb diet, and in fact am probably eating too few carbs (I couldn't
finish an orange the other day), and in general am "eating to live, not
living to eat".
That is how powerful this Maca is. Also, with my playing around with
when
to take the Maca, I have I think started putting my hormones in wack,
because I'd forget to take the evening dose, and then would start
feeling
depressed and weapy (it's that time of the month, I'm starting to FEEL
those
things again, instead of sublimating them with food).
Oh, there's just too much to tell you, but I feel like I am coming back
to
life again, after almost 10 years of just barely existing. That is your
influence, because I stumbled onto your web page over a year ago, and
have
been reading avidly ever since.
Thanks from me and the 1000's of others like me,
Grace
