I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 1996. It answered many questions to
my strange symptoms. I was started on Synthroid and unlike anyone else
I've ever spoken too who's taken it - I felt like someone slipped me
some LSD. I hallucinated, saw bright lights and could not function. It
took about 3 months to be able to sort of function. In that time I was
switched to the generic form & cytomel was added. I felt just terrible.
I tried acupuncture to help with the terrible effects of the synthetic
thyroid. It didn't really help. I switched endocrinologists and was put
on Armour. I had a very slight improvement. I switched Acupuncturists
to a very elderly Chinese doctor. She told me the medication did not
agree with me & was killing me. She was right. I did not think life
was worth living feeling like I was on LSD all the time (by this time it
was 2.5 years). We spent 8 months weaning me off of it. I felt immense
relief after 2 weeks off the meds. She retired about 3 months after I
was off the thyroid meds. I felt better off the meds than on but I
still had all sorts of hashimotos symptoms.
I gave up coffee with a homeopath who just couldn't click with me. My
chiropractor suggested I give up wheat. I found a 5 element
acupuncturist who told me I had to think about giving up sugar. But
before I made anymore dietary changes I lost 8 pounds over the first
weekend after my first visit w/my new acupuncturist!
I bought a digiwalker & started walking, aiming for 10,000 steps a day 5
days a week. 2 months later I started Atkins (this was July 28th). I
lost 22 lbs by the Jan. 2001! Lots of my symptoms are going away, but
best of all my early Nov. thyroid panel had all my thyroid & cholesterol
levels in the normal ranges!
I also take a number of supplements (most of which I heard about on your
website!). Some supplements did not work for me (like CLA, which gave
me terrible gas the whole 2 bottles worth!). Some were too expensive
for right now (L-Carnitine which made me feel GREAT but was so expensive
at $2/day). I take the following supplements:
- Emergen-c : this contains some vit.. Bs that I can take. Most vit..
Bs make me sick.
- 800 IU vit.. E
- MSM - 1000 mg (really helps my hair loss!)
- Joint Support: Glucosamine sulphur 300 mg, MSM 300 mg, Chondroitin
300 mg
- chelated Solamins: calcium 300mg, iron 10 mg, phosphorus 200 mg,
iodine 150 mg, magnesium 250 mg, zinc 10 mg, selenium 50 mg, copper .25
mg, manganese 10 mg, chromium 20 mcg., molybdenum mcg, sodium 15 mg,
potassium 99 mg
- calcium complex: calcium 1000 mg, magnesium 500 mg, zinc 15 mg
- CoQ10 30 mg (really helped my gums!)
- Quercetin complex: vit. C 500 mg, calcium 60 mg, Quercetin 500 mg,
bromelain 100 mg, citrus biofavonoids 50 mg, roes hips 20 mg, aceola
20mg, rutin 10 mg. THIS IS A MIRACLE! It helps prevent me from getting
colds & flus plus really helps my lungs. I can't say enough good things
about this supplement.
- Bromelain 500 mg. (for plantar fascitis, muscle aches)
- primrose oil (for perimenopause)
- Total EFA: ALA 699 mg, DHA 138 mg, EPA 216 mg, GLA 288 mg, Linoleic
Acid 620 mg, Oleic Acid 520 mg.
- vinpocetine 5 mg
I started the vinpocetine & L-Carnitine at the same time & I noticed my
brain fog disappearing by day 3! By day 4 I felt so great with loads of
energy. When I stopped the L-Carnitine the brain fog did not return. I
don't quite feel as energetic w/o the L-Carnitine.
I gained 50 lbs in 2 years when I first got sick. I would be very happy
to lose 40 of it. Today I have that last miserable 10 lbs to go. I'm
sure it would go easier if I was continueing with the L-Carnitine.
I read your site for all your suggestions on supplements & diet changes.
Most seem to work for me. Plus when I do research on the web for my
mom's better heart health, almost ALL of these supplements are
recommended!!
Thanks so much for your great site. It gave me hope that I could attain
health.
