Synthroid to Get New Manufacturer |

Knoll Pharmaceutical, Manufacturer of Synthroid, to be Sold to Abbott Laboratories

According to a report from Reuters, issued December 14, 2000, Europe's largest chemicals company, BASF AG, is likely to sell its Knoll Pharmaceuticals unit -- the manufacturer of thyroid drug Synthroid -- to Abbott Laboratories Inc.
Knoll's product line includes Synthroid, the third largest selling drug in the US in 1999, and the largest selling thyroid drug in the US. Other products include drugs for cardiovascular disease, and the diet drug Meridia. A major Knoll product is D2E7, an antibody drug for rheumatoid arthritis that is licensed from the UK company.
Abbott Laboratories is an international company involved in research, development, manufacture and sale of healthcare-related products and services. The company has five different areas of business, including Pharmaceutical Products, Diagnostic Products, Hospital Products, Ross Products and and International division.
