"Has the GMC gone mad? A great thyroid doctor has been suspended!..I think this is a terrible thing for the GMC to do. He has helped so many people who were told things like 'it's all in there mind' or 'what do you expect, it's your sex/ age/ just you!' I am so happy that I found our what was wrong with me. I now take thyroid every day and my life has been turned around thanks to doctors like Barry Peatfield."

UK thyroid patient advocate Diana Holmes wants her fellow thyroid patients to know that the 18-month suspension of Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield's license to practice medicine will have serious ramifications world wide.
She urges US and UK patients to take proactive action in contacting the media to further protest the situation. A recent article in the Independent has covered the situation briefly, but more in-depth coverage is needed. (See Claims of ‘witch-hunt’ as doctor is suspended for alternative thyroid care "The Independent," May 18, 2001)
According to Diana, author of Tears Behind Closed Doors, "one of the charges was 'failure to carry out blood tests.' How many times has the blood test result proved to be useless? A second charge was 'using thyroid preparations unsuitable for patients.' Here, the GMC is talking about thyroid extracts. As we know, natural thyroid drugs are used widely in America. A third argument was 'using adrenal support without cause or proper explanations.' Dr. Peatfield uses physiological doses of steroids at non-suppressive levels. This was NOT the case for me with the NHS, which gave large doses of steroids for two diseases I didn't have, without taking a blood test."
Says Diana:
There are those in the medical world to day who are holding on to past
mandates with a clenched fist, in respect of diagnosis and management of
thyroid conditions. Irrespective of the suffering around them they
selfishly regard their word as law. The worst offenders are those who hold
influential positions in the world of endocrinology because not only do
they control the rest of the medical world with their outdated modus
operandi but they also control the media.
Lay people may take a thyroid issue to the media because they want it
aired. Whether the media be newspapers, television or radio the respective
research teams go to their own health Editor who in turn goes to the
programme's doctor and the doctor goes straight to the endocrinologists
WHO ARE HOLDING ON TO PAST MANDATES. The doctors are told to ignore what
has been said as, "It is absolute nonsense, these people do not know what
they are talking about". These medics are more interested in defending
their own attitude. In fact, they want all new approaches relating to
diagnosing and managing thyroid conditions squashed without dialogue. If
only they would take a logical look at the viewpoint that has been put
forward and perhaps meeting with those who hold a different stance to
discuss the issue. We are in a vicious circle and until this practice
stops we will find it very difficult to break through.
THIS IS A TWO-FOLD 'HUMAN RIGHTS' ISSUE
1. THE PATIENT IS WITHOUT A DOCTOR
2. THE DOCTOR HAS LOST HIS RIGHT TO EARN A LIVING.
