March 27, 2001 -- If you were one of the millions tuned in last night to PBS' special documentary with Bill Moyers, "Trade Secrets", you heard an expose' about the chemical industry and how they regularly hid the information about the health implications of their products from the public and their employees for decades. (Note: If you missed this ground-breaking program, PBS has posted the complete transcript of the program online.)
This program reminds us that there are chemicals in things as common as drinking water and toothpaste, and even on airplanes -- that may have the ability to harm the thyroid. Many of these are chemicals that have yet to be sufficiently evaluated, tested and studied, or have powerful lobbies behind them supporting their continued public use and exposure.
Chemicals they touched upon in the PBS documentary -- such as dioxins and PCBs -- have been linked to endocrine disorders, and in some cases thyroid problems. But even more so, chemicals such as perchlorate, a by product of rocket fuel production, and fluoride -- added to water and toothpaste -- and even pesticides used on airplanes. are even more directly linked to thyroid dysfunction.
