Richard and Karilee Shames, authors of "Thyroid Power," have taken a good look at how patients should
investigate the best thyroid drug for them. They argue that even the best possible dose may not be best
for you, if you're not taking the right drug.
They believe that patients on levothyroxine who don't feel well may wish to consider changing to a
competing brand. Say the Shames: "Of the four supposedly-equivalent brands of thyroxine sold in the
United States
(Synthroid, Levothroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid), each is the special favorite for many thousands of
people...We know of a number of doctors, not to mention entire HMOs, who have a 'favorite' brand of
thyroxine. However, it may not be YOUR body's favorite brand."
They also believe patients should understand research studies and how they're conducted, and why it's
particularly difficult to say that any particular brand of thyroid medicine is best, based on studies.
