American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA)
Grade: A
The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) gets an A, in recognition of the groups successful efforts to raise the visibility of autoimmune disease among the public, healthcare and medical researchers, legislators and policymakers, and federal agencies. In 2003, thanks in main part to the efforts of AARDA, the NIH created a formal office to study autoimmune disease, and funded a number of autoimmune Centers of Excellence. Newsweek magazine also named autoimmunity one of 2003s top health stories.
Says Shomon, Thanks to the comprehensive and pioneering efforts of AARDA, led by the tireless Virginia Ladd, we are moving closer to finding ways to prevent -- and even potentially cure -- thyroid disease, which are the most common of the more than 60 autoimmune conditions.
