Eating Whole Grains May Protect Against Disease

March, 2001

by Mary J. Shomon

According to research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating whole grain foods may have health benefits that include protection against disease.

The study, which looked at more than 30,000 adults in Norway, found that those who ate the most whole grain foods had a 23% reduction in risk from heart disease, and a 21% reduced risk of cancer -- versus those who ate few whole grain foods.

If you want to incorporate whole grains into your diet, don't just reach for the loaf of "wheat bread" or "multi-grain" muffins, however. Very few products are actually truly whole grain. Experts say, for example, that breads should list "rolled oats," or "cracked wheat" as primary ingredients, in order to qualify as "whole grain."
