New England Workshop for Thyroid Cancer May 3

April 2003 -- The Third Annual New England Workshop for Thyroid Cancer Survivors is being held at St. Joseph Hospital, 172 Kinsley Street, Nashua, New Hampshire (Carl Amelio Room) on May 3, 2003, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Carl Amelio Room at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire. The workshop is organized by local support groups affiliated with ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association, Inc., a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to survivor education and outreach. The workshop is free to thyroid cancer survivors, their families and healthcare professionals. (The group does not, however, recommend bringing children under age 13 who are not thyroid cancer survivors.)

Sponsors include: the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Genzyme Therapeutics, and ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association.

The program will begin at 8:45 a.m. with registration, a continental breakfast and an opportunity for survivors with this rare cancer to meet informally with other survivors. The morning program includes:

9:30 a.m. Colleen Conley, Thyrogen Clinical Science Associate with Genzyme Therapeutics, who will review the use of Thyrogen in whole-body scans for papillary and follicular thyroid cancer

10:00 a.m. Jack M. Monchik, M.D., Chief of Endocrine Surgery, Rhode Island Hospital and Clinical Professor of Surgery, Brown University of Medicine, who will discuss "Thyroid Carcinoma and Current Therapy and Recent Advances."

11:15 a.m. Mary Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism and Living Well With Autoimmune Disease, who will discuss Coping Skills: Complementary and Palliative Approaches.

The afternoon program will focus on complimentary approaches and issues for cancer patients. Topics will include: acupuncture for nausea and pain relief , spirituality and fighting cancer, massage therapy and nutrition. Speakers will include: Maureen Byrnes, Sean Doherty, Nashua Natural Medicine, Dr. Christine Doherty, Nashua Natural Medicine, Rev. Barbara Smith-Litchfield and Rev. C. Stanley Litchfield.
ThyCa's regional workshops are part of the free resources the non-profit volunteer organization has created to help survivors around the world. In addition to annual regional workshops in New England, volunteers facilitate local support groups in Connecticut, Massachusetts (Boston and Methuen), New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
