If you are taking thyroid hormone replacement drugs - levothyroxine, Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroid, Thyrolar, Armour Thyroid, or natural thyroid - your doctor should have told you NOT to take your thyroid hormone within 3 or more hours before or after taking calcium or iron supplements. Calcium and iron both have the ability to bind with your thyroid medicine and make it less effective. This can make someone who is hypothyroid even more hypothyroid.

And if you have had thyroid cancer, and are on suppressive therapy, this can cause your TSH to rise, and put you at increased risk of thyroid cancer recurrence.

Keep in mind, this caution also applies to calcium-fortified orange juice!
