New England Patient Thyroid Cancer Workshop Scheduled for May 18th | |
SOURCE: THYCA NEWS RELEASE
On May 18, the second annual regional workshop for thyroid cancer survivors will be held at Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island. The
workshop is organized by ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association, Inc., a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to survivor education and
outreach. There is no need to register in advance, and thanks to sponsors, including the American Cancer Society, the workshop is free to thyroid cancer
survivors, their families and healthcare professionals. More information is available at ThyCas web site www.thyca.org.
The program will begin in the auditorium at 9:30 a.m. and will include three endocrinologists who specialize in treating thyroid cancer survivors.
After each speaker, the audience will have time for questions and answers.
Stephanie Lee, M.D., Ph.D. of the Boston Medical Center, who will review her
research on the low iodine diet, which thyroid cancer survivors must follow
for two weeks before having whole body scans and radioiodine therapy.
Arturo Rolla, M.D. of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, who will
talk about thyroid functions and how thyroid cancer impacts survivors.
R. Michael Tuttle, M.D., of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New
York, who will talk about the use of Thyrogen in the management of thyroid
cancer.
Conference organizers are committed to help other survivors because thyroid
cancer is a disease that impacts survivors from the time of diagnosis for the
rest of their lives. They must learn to cope with a strict regimen of daily
medications plus the impact of periodic tests and treatments that can
significantly affect the quality of their lives.
ThyCas regional workshops are just part of the free resources the non-profit
volunteer organization has created to help survivors around the world. In
addition to this annual workshop, volunteers facilitate four local support
groups in New England in Warwick, RI; Boston, MA; Lawrence, MA; and Nashua,
NH. Information about the workshop or local support groups is available at
ThyCas web site at www.thyca.org or by calling ThyCa Survivors Toll-Free Telephone Service at 877-588-7904.
