PRESS RELEASE: BIOSAFE Receives FDA Approval For New At-Home Thyroid Testing Method
Company Will Also Unveil Its New 'Blood Transport System'

August 7, 2001

LAKE FOREST, Ill., -- BIOSAFE Laboratories, Inc. announced today that it has received FDA clearance for consumer use of its Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test. Used to screen for Thyroid Disease, BIOSAFE's TSH test was previously FDA approved for professional use only. But now, for the first time, a TSH test has been approved for at-home use. The TSH test was developed by BIOSAFE utilizing the Company's patent pending capillary ``Blood Transport System'' (BTS), which allows for the collection and shipping of a micro-sample (one to three drops) of blood taken from a single ``nick'' of a finger. While all specimen processing will be performed at BIOSAFE's CLIA certified laboratory in Chicago, the BTS and its sister products, the Serum Transport System (STS) and the Cell Transport System (CTS), provide a convenient and virtually painless alternative to the usual collection method of drawing blood from the arm required for clinical tests.

TSH is one of the principle laboratory tests recommended by the American Thyroid Association for detecting either over-active or under-active thyroid conditions. Thyroid hormones control energy levels and metabolism. Too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) can cause weight loss, diarrhea, vision problems, fast heartbeat, and trouble coping with high temperatures. Too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) can cause weight gain or difficulty losing weight, constipation, fatigue, depression, slow heartbeat, and trouble with cold temperatures. Even though thyroid disease can pose a serious health threat, a recent national survey by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists revealed that almost 60 percent of Americans have never been tested for a thyroid condition.

BIOSAFE President, David Fleisner said, ``We're very excited about the future of our new test and blood transportation system. Through this innovative approach to blood sample collection, we are providing millions of people with quick, convenient, and painless access to a procedure that has far-reaching health benefits. Since most Americans have yet to be tested for their TSH levels, we believe this procedure has vast market potential.''

BIOSAFE expects to begin shipment of its special blood collection kits by mid-October. Each kit allows for the collection of a small sample of blood (three drops) into the special BTS collection device, which is then sent to the laboratory for testing. Blood collection kits will be available directly from the BIOSAFE Web site at by calling 1-888-700-TEST (8378).
