Chernobyl: 16 Years Later | |
Today, April 26, 2002 is the 16th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, and various concerns still plague the Ukraine, and other areas that were downwind of the world's worst nuclear disaster.
Ukraine Appeals to World: Do Not Forget Chernobyl -- The Ukraine is appealing to the world not to forget Chernobyl and its victims who still need help today, where thousands have died due to radiation-related illness, and a huge increase in rates of thyroid cancer have been seen, particularly among those who were infants or children at the time of the disaster.
Ukraine Concerned Over Increasing Chernobyl Cancers -- 16 years after Chernobyl, Ukrainian health officials are concerned about the ever-growing number of Chernobyl-related cancer cases. Last year, more than 3,000 people with thyroid cancer were registered, compared with only 119 in 1986.
Cancer Patients File 200 Lawsuits in France in connection with Chernobyl disaster -- Meanwhile, in Paris, a group of cancer patients have filed 200 lawsuits, claiming that their illnesses are due to France's failure to warn people about the radioactive risks as the Chernobyl radioactive fallout spread across Europe. Among those suing are 20 thyroid cancer patients.
