AACE Again Defends Synthroid in Letter to Wall Street Journal

June 2001

In a letter to the editor, responding to the June 1, 2001 Wall Street Journal article about concerns regarding Synthroid, Rhoda H. Cobin, M.D., President of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has again come to bat for the beleaguered drug.

In the letter, Cobin states: "the 3,700 physicians in our organization, all specialists in thyroid disease, have found that Synthroid has a long record of safety, efficacy, reliability and consistency..."

She also states that "careful laboratory assessment rarely confirms that inconsistency in the drug is responsible for the multitude of symptoms reported by the 'patient activist' in your article."

See the full letter by Cobin at the AACE website.

NOTE: In the interest of disclosure to patients, it should be noted that AACE has a financial relationship with Synthroid, which is disclosed on the sponors page of the AACE website. AACE does not show any financial relationships with Levoxyl or Unithroid, the two FDA-approved levothyroxine drugs.

For a better understanding of the relationships between pharmaceutical companies and the professional organizations that publicly support them, read: Are You Being Duped by Pharmaceutical Companies?, from the British Medical Journal, which discusses how pharmaceutical companies manipulate doctors and use them to push their products.
