Exercise physiologist and trainer Jay Williams, Ph.D., has put together a book that is actually 8 books in one. 24 Hour Turnaround provides guidance on a variety of life changes -- changes that you can make today, but ones that will have an impact within 24 hours.
I liked this book. It's an easy read, and Jay's approach is friendly, not preachy. Jay's approach is to combine the ingredients of weight loss and wellness into one program. Her program rests on eight tactics, and each one has its own chapter:
1: Master mood and motivation. Jay offers a particularly helpful "Mastering Motivation" technique that can help you boost willpower.
2: Become your own personal trainer. Jay offers a specific workouto she calls the H.E.A.R.T. workout- which can help promote and sustain weight loss without overstressing the body. Jay does not believe in rigorously working yourself to exhaustion, but rather moderate but effective exercise.
3: Definition Diet. Jay focuses on five smaller meals a day, emphasizing healthy foods.
4: Hydration. Jay is a big believer in hydration and water, and emphasizes this as part of her program.
5: Alcohol moderation. Jay believes that skipping alcohol can help burn fat and remove toxins.
6: Rest/sleep. Jay explains how getting enough sleep can help with developing human growth hormone, boosting immune function, and even losing weight.
7: Balance hormones. Jay talks about how foods, exercise, natural hormone balancers and other factors can help.
8: Destress with mind-body "innercise," -- Jay teaches a useful heart-rate biofeedback technique you can use to learn to "relax on demand."
It's an interesting book that I found particularly helpful to dip in and out of at times for inspiration and ideas. Jay has a variety of good suggestions that you can start incorporating into your lifestyle today. Even if you don't start her entire 8-step program, adopting just a few of her ideas will mean definite improvements in your health!
