Specifically for those reading this who have been concerned about doubts raised regarding the quality of information on this site, please know this is our well-considered opinion: Mary Shomon is a patient advocate. She is not a health practitioner, and does not present herself as one. We have found the information that she shares to be thought provoking, eye-opening, and often quite helpful. She cites sources for her information, whether it be a peer-reviewed journal or an interview with a practicing physician. She has provided a quality service for thousands who were unable to find answers elsewhere.

The controversial topics, such as benefits of nutritional intervention, alternatives to thyroxine alone, desiccated thyroid versus synthetic, home testing for TSH, New guidelines for TSH interpretation by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, corroborated by the American Association for CLinical Chemistry - are presented with a measured understanding that these ideas might be useful to some people, and not to others. We can assure you, from personal experience, that there are many sensible and careful physicians from across the country who embrace the ideas that Mary shares on her website.

As health professionals, we are extremely grateful that someone such as Mary has been willing to sift through the voluminous literature, sharing results and ideas with a public desperate for solutions. We appreciate the fact that she is a consumer, speaking directly to consumers, simplifying and clarifying what we know to be a vast storehouse of differing perspectives.

We heartily endorse her efforts and accomplishments, and urge everyone to work as a team, honoring the unique viewpoints and knowing that we are all humans on this wondrous journey, each person seeking to feel his or her best, and recognizing that there may be many paths to the goals we share.

Wishing all who read this greater health and peace,

Karilee Shames PhD, RN, AHN - C
