Richard and Karilee Shames are husband and wife as well as doctor and nurse AND thyroid practitioner
and thyroid patient. Karilee herself is hypothyroid as are several of the couples children. They have
been working with people suffering from low thyroid for over twenty-five years.
It turns out that the cause of virtually all cases of low thyroid is not so much the faulty thyroid gland as
it is an over-zealous immune system.
If you have a family history of low thyroid, diabetes, or other rheumatic/autoimmune illness, then almost
any serious physical or mental stress might trigger the immune system into mischievous action against
the thyroid.
Our emotions, our stress level, and the very fabric of our inner life are directly related to the quality of
brain-immune conversation.
The triggering of the autoimmune phenomenon resulting in common low thyroid is indeed possible from
stress alone.
There are a variety of tips for controlling your autoimmune thyroid problems using mind-body
techniques, and these are explored in an in-depth interview with the Shames on
Autoimmune Thyroid Disease.
