If you want to hear something that is truly funny, check out the seminar titled "Thyroidology on the Internet: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," which was presented at the September 2003 American Thyroid Association meeting. A bevy of endos offer their opinions about what they think about various websites, lavish praise over those groups, sites and bulletin boards funded by their friends at Synthroid and Levoxyl, and generally try desperately to keep their egos in check as they assess particular sites, including mine, and those created by...ahem...patients! You'll find it hard not to burst out laughing as Dr. Matthew Kim shudders over one online forum where patients actually DARE to discuss -- by NAME -- the doctors they feel have provided less than optimal care. (How DARE those patients!) And that's not all -- he then declares that because it dares to say something negative about doctors, is is obviously a forum that is "insufficiently moderated." It's "Reality TV" at its finest (and most frightening...at least for patients!)... Tune in now!
