Status of Erfa Natural Desiccated Thyroid Availability

By January 8, 2014

Follow me on:

I contacted Dr. Henri Knafo, the Medical Director for Erfa Canada, to ask about availability of Erfa, the Canadian brand of prescription natural desiccated thyroid, which has been experiencing recent shortages. Here is his information, as of January 8, 2014:
The demand for ERFA thyroid has been just crazy for the past few months this is why we were in back order for a few weeks. The situation is now almost solved since we increased the production and will be able to supply all demands. The 30mg and 125mg is available as we speak in all pharmacies across Canada. The 60mg will become available next week.
We will continue to offer support and information for US patients wanting to get Thyroid. They simply can contact us and we will guide them so they can get their medication.

I just received a new 100 tab bottle supply and it was not the original Erfa. It was a larger pill, a different color, had some marking on one side which ERFA did NOT, and I had a different reaction to it that was negative. I had been on Erfa since Aug 1 2013 and had NO reactions to the inactive ingredients. I had some hives which I overcame. I called Northwest Pharmacy, the supplier, and they said it just came from another supplier, Pharma Pharmacy and all was OK. I am going to ask for an exchange today. It is NOT Erfa. The bottle said “Thyroid” and that was it. It had no package insert. NOTHING in the delivery said Erfa. I am very disappointed…

(2) Angie says:

I have been in touch with ERFA regularly about the availability of 30 mg since early November. Day before yesterday, Pharmasource was down for maintenance and I could not order any strength. Please ask ERFA to let us know when USA pts can order again.

(3) Antonia says:

Glad it’s almost resolved.
Funny, since I called them and left a voicemail at the prompt, and the Erfa company never got back to me at all. He says, “They simply can contact us and we will guide them so they can get their medication.”

This is exactly what I requested of them. No reply. Oh, well. I’ll wait till it’s back a my usual sources.

Thanks, Mary, for this reassuring news!

Jan.14,2014 – I have also been using ERFA Thyroid for the last 2 years. After 3 years of being on Synthroid and then the re-formulated Armour – I had gained 30 lbs and was miserable. ERFA was the answer. Pharma Sourcing website has been down for weeks. I emailed Caroline Kort who is the administrator that handles my prescriptions for my new order. She kindly responded that they are working with a new Canadian supplier and she should have the details for me that week. That was last week.and I haven’t heard anything.
Now I am concerned about the comment left with regard to a new supplier and the meds not looking the same or working the same or even saying ERFA on the bottle. I cannot go back to the way I use to feel.
Any comments about ERFA supplier would be appreciated. Does Westhroid work as well as ERFA?

I have been trying to refill my thyroid prescription since mid December. At that time I was told the meds were held up in customs. Since then I have not been able to reach anyone. I am getting worried especially since I am now hearing that the product is changed. Can you get any info?

Efra`s Name is Thyroid. Efra is just the maker not the name of the pill

(7) Jennifer says:

ERFA Thyroid 30 mgs. was just received TODAY by Canada Drugs. I know of no other company in Canada that is providing it online at this time. Pharmasourcing will no longer be a viable option as they will no longer be filling ERFA Thyroid orders. (This info is directly from Dr. Knafo’s office at ERFA) You can reach Canada Drugs at 1-800-226-3784 or via their website. I totally understand the frustration and confusion and I hope that this helps.

(8) NeighborhoodEnforcer says:

To CHAIR, Thank you very much for your enlightening comment. We will remember it for a long time. In a day with so much bad news, your comment made me laugh out loud. First, you are partially right that the name of medication that was referred to is called THYROID, very common and nondescript name, that is why anyone who knows the hypothyroid subject knows things like TT RAI and we dont call it THYROID, we call it THYROID BY the manufacture name OR just the manufacture name for short. Everyone that knows this subject knows that. Second if you knew the medical credentials or the number of posts here of the person you corrected, not only would you apologize but you would be very embarrassed for some time. But to get to the laughter out loud. If you find it your mission to comment and not leave a comment with any substance, no news, no info on the main subject, especially if you plan to correct someone who did comment with good substance and helping news on the main subject, if you find it your mission to correct people (Im still giggling) please make sure if you are TELLING people the correct name and you are CORRECTING people, please make sure that you spell your very important correction properly. A typo is once. You Chair typed twice EFRA. Thanks for the humor, if it was intentional, you got me, if not thanks again. A typo is once.
Here’s some news, just got off the phone with Erfa, they are not selling IT for now, Carolyn said short term, I wonder. She also said that all sizes are now available thru normal means. I hope this was helpful. HaHa haha ….

January 16, 2014 at 11:05 pm
(9) Jennifer says:

As of today, Universal Drugstore in Canada has the 30 mgs. in stock and is taking orders. 1-866-456-2456. Also, Caroline Kort at ERFA will give you information and a form to complete and info. for the “Canadian Pharmacy” who will also be selling the 30 mgs. (inc. U.S. patients). You can reach her directly at the number above in Mary’s article.

Neighborhood Enforcer, I too have spoken many times with Caroline and I’m not sure that all sizes are yet available through all ‘normal’ means yet. But I’m hoping to offer info. that I have directly from ERFA and the drug stores who I am positive are filling orders now. If there are more, I’m hopeful that others post as well…that’s the beauty of this site.

Also Neighborhood Enforcer I’ve known many people who are confused by Thyroid being the brand name and ERFA being the company, so I think CHAR’s comment was helpful. After all, we were all new to this at one time, right? Forgive me if I missed your humor, but was your misspelling of CHAR’s name intentional or do you have typo issues? I love a good laugh, but this was a sticky situation for many people who depend on this medication…Think it’s great to offer and receive all of the support possible from each other right now. Hope you’re faring well.

January 16, 2014 at 11:48 pm
(10) Jennifer says:

I also meant to mention that according to two pharmacists as well as Dr. Knafo’s office at ERFA , the formulation of ERFA Thyroid has NOT changed, so if you are receiving pills that do not look or taste or appear the same as the ERFA Thyroid pills, there may be a problem.

January 17, 2014 at 12:37 am
(11) NeighborhoodBiggy says:

“so I think CHAR’s comment was helpful.” Lmao!
‘Efra`s Name is Thyroid.’ What does that even mean. Also please have Cher contact the author and the two of you can correct her on the proper terminology, look at the title and paragraph, oh so confusing and wrong. I apologize for not asking permission before talking to Caroline, also Im so hypo my ears misheard what she said and my memory is even worse. You are right and what I said was wrong. Thanks for clearing that up.
NEWS: I cancelled my script at NorthwestPharmacy, they say they have all sizes 30, 60, 125. Beware of these generic imposters. I cancelled because of great info from a medical professional thyroid patient here, I love this site, thanks for the warning.
QualityPrescriptionDrugs still doesn’t have any sizes yet, thats what they said today, I cant remember. Finally if you dont see the irony with rudely telling someone they are wrong (with bad english) and then misspelling the correction twice, E F R A. Well what do you giggle at?

January 17, 2014 at 11:05 am
(12) Jennifer says:

Neighborhood Enforcer/Neighborhood Bully, it took me a minute to realize that you are the same person…As a matter of fact, you have ‘enlightened ‘me and I DO, as you say “see the irony with rudely telling someone they are wrong (with bad english) and then misspelling….” because that’s exactly what you’ve done to CHAR, however, I don’t find that worthy of a giggle. But hey, everyone’s humor is different.
What I am trying to determine (for the sake of people who are looking to order ERFA and came here for accurate information) is clarification on the two pharmacies you mentioned. Checking online, it appears that Northwest Pharmacy offers Natural Desiccated Thyroid (Thyroid Equivalent to Armour) but it offers it in 125, 180, and 240 mg strengths. They do not mention ERFA in the description and since ERFA Thyroid, to the best of my knowledge, only comes in 30, 60 or 125 mg, tablets, that may not necessarily be ERFA Thyroid, at least the 180 and 240 strengths. (Maybe that’s the issue that Karen had)
As for Quality Prescription Drugs it appears that they do have the 30mgs. as well as the 60mgs. and 125 mgs. (As far as availability, you said the opposite, but again, you may have done that for laughs). Maybe you can clear that up because it is confusing and I think people are looking for help here, not sarcasm. If your intentions were pure and you were trying to help, then thank you. I wasn’t familiar with them and seems like it’s another good source.

January 17, 2014 at 11:06 am
(13) Jennifer says:

And one final comment-
NOTE: The information about formulation was in response to the comment made by Karen and others who have concerns that the pill was different or had been changed. Since many people went through major problems with the Armour reformulation following their backorder in 2009, it’s a genuine concern for some. A change in the formulation or dose of thyroid meds can be very serious for some, Neighborhood Enforcer/NeighborhoodBiggie. I know. It’s landed me in the hospital more than once…And to me, that’s no laughing matter.
OK, I’m done with this banter. Now on to the business of healthy living. I REALLY hope that you feel better soon – in every way.

(14) Keith says:

I am also waiting for my prescription to arrive. Called again today and they said my orders is on back order with no expected date for it being filled.
In the time being, I’m trying Acella, which I haven’t used before, but it does not have any cellulose like armour does now, so it can be used sublingually like ERFA.

(15) Liveaboard says:

Hi y’all, just got off the phone with QualityPrecriptionsDrugs.com 877-244-0429 again and talked to Maria. She informed me that my order for Erfa Thyroid can not be filled yet as they have no 30s or 60s. She has no info on availability date. As of today at Noon they do have the 125s, she double checked with the pharmacy, they didn’t have these last week. I normally pay $47.50 total for #200 60mg that take 9-13 days to get to S.Florida. They have been very friendly and professional.

Also called NorthwestPharmacy.com first I talked to Loraine, she was very nice but tried to sell me some ‘Erfa’ Thyroid 180mg or 240mg. I then talked to manager Ken who was very rude and uninformed. He didn’t know if the Thyroid he sells was Erfa or generic. They don’t know if they have Erfa and neither do I. Caveat Emptor, “Let the buyer beware.”

I’m taking locally available NP Thyroid by Acella in the meantime. I like that the NP Thyroid is sublingual, have had good results with no apparent side-effects but still have reservations for using this as plan A for longterm. My concerns are 1) its generic 2) its made FOR Acella not BY Acella.

I hope this information helps, I’m NEVER returning to T4 Only, and I will never trust Levoxyl again. T4 + T3 or NDT, thanks to the recall I’m way more educated than before. Thank you Pfizer.

So does anyone have an update on this status. Where can one get
the EFRA Thyroid filled these days?

(17) Jon says:

Real quick, Neighborhood wise ass, whoever/whatever (he/she) you are,we are all suffering just like you so if you find irony, a good giggle, etc., keep it your self and shut up unless you have info to actually help.

I have been getting my Erfa Thyroid for years, since Armor’s reformulation, from Canada Pharmacy Online with not problem besides paying cash. As of January 27th, they still had all dosages on back order and had no idea when they would have any in. So I have needed to start Armor again this week and all of my Hypo symptoms have returned.

Someone advised me of http://www.inhousepharmacy.biz which sells Erfa in 30, 60 and 125mg so I was about to purchase my 125mg pills but wanted to get others feed back first. I can’t call them as its 8am EST in US on Sunday so I have no idea if they are actually in stock. Also this site doesn’t require a script as Canadian Pharmacy online always had with me. How have your past Canadian pharmacies handled your orders?

If any of you have updates on the availability of the real Erfa Thyroid, especially the 125mg, please let me know.

Also I have always thought about trying the Accella (sp?) product but was worried it would be like the new Armor so have stuck with Thyroid. But please let me know anyone’s experience with it, especially if you had negative reaction to new armor. BTW- I have never taken any NDT via letting it dissolve under my tongue like others? This is not due to laziness, it is b/c I need to take a handful of pills when I wake up.

I would appreciate any and all help as it used to take my orders 7-10 days to arrive in NY.

thanks guys and girls. Time to decide what dose of Armor to try now then go to sleep. Yup sleep schedule is all out of whack-red bull helps.:)

(20) Mary says:

I just wanted to let everyone know my recent experience with Erfa. I am sick as I write this. I have been taking Erfa thyroid for 3 years and got my script refilled in the last couple of weeks through Northwest Pharmacy. I received it 4 days ago and started taking it the next morning. Since I have taken it I have had stomach issues and diarrhea. Today is day 4 of taking it. About 30 minutes after taking it (on empty stomach) I began to have severe stomach cramps, bloating, belching, and then the diarrhea started. I have flu-like symptoms. I am also gluten intolerant, have Hashimoto’s, reaction to fillers, etc. I am wondering if it has been reformulated or if I have been sent a generic version that contains gluten (although I didn’t think there was one), or what is going on. Am awaiting phone-call from pharmacist there to try to find out if this is indeed Erfa and what, if anything, has been done different. My system is clean and i know when I have ingested gluten or something else I am allergic to. There is definitely something wrong with this med.

Why do my orders thru CANADA DRUGS for ERFA THYROID always come from PACIFIC CARE PHARMACY in PORT VILA, VANUATU? VANUATU is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, a looooong way from Canada.

(22) Angie says:

Wanted to post that I also have had problems on my 2014 refills of ERFA. Stomach issues, inconsistent absorption, mood and energy drop, etc., etc. If they have not reformulated, there is a problem with some of their batches or manufacturing.

March 15, 2014 at 7:44 am
(23) Angie says:

I thought I had posted this yesterday, but do not see that it has come through. I also have used ERFA since fall of 2009 and have experienced nothing but problems with my 2014 refill. GI issues as well as a host of other symptoms. Something is going on with either the batch itself or ERFA HAS reformulated. I have contacted The Canadian Pharmacy but the guy there is a total butt and is being non-responsive. Have also contacted Dr. Knafo/ERFA directly. Mary, we may need your help with this issue!

March 15, 2014 at 1:50 pm
(24) Frustrated says:

I can also verify the ERFA thyroid meds I received in 2014 from canadadrugs are off somehow. I have continuously went downhill since starting them. Not sure what it is, they look the same except for the coating is kind of shinier? But YES something is wrong. I’m seriously debating trying another type of NDT. Hoping someone can find some answers. I have not had any labs since beginning these either. Need to get that done.

To all having issues with 2014 refills of ERFA. I had labs drawn recently so will soon see if anything is off there. Have contacted Dr. Knafo directly with our questions and as he has always been responsive in the past, am hoping for an answer on Monday.

To all having problems with 2014 refills of ERFA. I received a prompt and considerate reply from Dr. Knafo this morning. He states that the manufacturing is now done in a new, more modern (but still European) facility. He says that nothing has changed except the machines used for compression. He has sent an email to his colleague at the manufacturing facility. He asks specifically for all having problems to contact him directly. (27) Vonda says:

I received my last batch of ERFA Thyroid about late January and started taking it sometime in February. It didn’t work for me like it did before. My temp dropped to an average of 98.1 and I felt so tired and weak. I heard they changed facilities where it’s processed and that the processing method is different. I also take Synthroid and just got what seems to be a bad batch of it also. After a week of Nature Throid I was finally doing better, and then, wham, the Synthroid is messed up. My body seems to be awfully sensitive to things. My thyroid gets thrown off by bad meds at least once a year. Once it does, my Lyme flares up. :-(

(30) Lazarou says:

My friend has been unable to tolerate new Erfa, after being on it for 18 months. We have contacted Dr Knafo at Erfa who conceded that the manufacturing has been moved to a new facility (from Belgium to Spain) but stated that the manufacturing process and ingredients have not changed, only the machine used to press the tablets.

That is the last we heard, Dr Knafo said he would call us to talk about the problem but we haven’t heard anything since. Her pharmacist won’t give a refund/replacement as the problem hasn’t been confirmed or even made public.

I think it’s disgraceful how the NDT manufacturers behave, this kind of thing as most of you know has happened before and the people who suffer with this terrible, life altering and under-exposed condition are forced to endure more undeserved suffering. I agree the Type 2 Diabetes must be an unpleasant thing to have to deal with but Hypo/hyperthyroidism is 100 times more damaging and yet is nowhere near as prominent in the public consciousness. People I know with Type 2 seem to get on with their lives unlike people with Hypo/hyperthyroidism are left to rot (unless you have a lot of money and even then there are no guarantees)

I suppose expense is the problem, but I don’t know any other condition where the patient has to self diagnose, self treat and for the most part pay out of their own pockets for the privilege. Seeing my friend suffer from this horrible thing has really opened my eyes.

My friend has been forced to change NDT brand (again) this time for WP thyroid but it seems to be having no effect, I hope they sort out the Erfa problem soon.

Still hoping to hear that we have a resolution to the ERFA problem (2014 meds not working as before)..Hear that Dr. Knafo is concerned..but am starting to be concerned that this is lip service. They can not tell me they have not changed the meds. If they truly have not, then they need to be looking at contamination, raw product and other issues that might affect our end product. I have not done well since starting..hypo symptoms, but can not raise dose due to palps. Mary Shomon, can you help with this????

April 28, 2014 at 12:36 pm
(33) Pete says:

I opened a new bottle of Erfa Thyroid las week and realized right away that something had changed. The new pills are hard as rock. The funny thing is that here in Finland the reformulated bottles appear to be identical to the old ones so there’s no way of knowing that you’ve just received the new version of Erfa until you open it. And I’m starting to feel hypo. I haven’t felt this slow since I can’t even remember when…

I have also been on ERFA THYROID since 2009. I received my 2014 refill in February, and I have experienced severe abdominal bloating, and no menstrual cycle. My hair is shedding and I have gained 8 pounds. I usually ordered my Thyroid medication directly from ERFA, before 2014. The 2014 batch that I have now is from Universal Drugstore. I now have to find another medication to take until ERFA resolves their manufacturing issues. Clearly the formulation was not right and we are all now suffering.

(41) Sasha says:

I’ve just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and been given erfa 60mg, but told to take half a pill for two weeks and work my way up to the whole grain. I can’t speak for the previous batches since I never took them, but upon taking 30mg for the first week I was what I can only describe as a zombie. I couldn’t get out of bed and was sleeping 17 hours a day and my brain wasn’t functioning. Not great as I’m doing my masters. Basically I was feeling more hypo than ever. I called my doctor here in Belgium to tell him there was something wrong and he was very surprised that I was feeling worse. I was told to stop the drug for a few days (and I felt normal again-low energy, but still able to function) and then lower the dose to 15mg which I’ve now done. I have terrible stomach cramps and my energy levels are up and down since starting the pills again.

Is this normal when starting on thyroid meds for the first time or could it be this ‘new’ batch.

I feel completely lost as I hate the idea of taking hormones and am so new to this and to top that off the meds are making me feel a lot worse. Can someone please give me some guidance?

Thank you

Please continue to contact Dr. Knafo directly..email furnished at the top of this discussion if you too are experiencing problems with ERFA manufactured at the new (Spain) facility. He tells me that ERFA is investigating the problem and will keep me (us) informed.. Continue to maintain that something is off. Have been taking this med VERY successfully since 2009..life changing..now back to problems and issues.Again..make sure you communicate your issues to ERFA directly so that they know they have a problem.

I contacted Dr. Knafo directly. It appears my latest Erfa Thyroid bottle (lot: 13G051) was made in the old factory. But these Thyroid tablets are totally different to what I’ve had before. They are really hard, and are bringing my symptoms back. So it appears they changed something in the tablets even before the manufacturing factory was changed. Knafo told me that the formulation hasn’t changed. But something surely has.

Pete I agree with you. I have batch number 13C06 expiry 03/2016 (500 x 125mgs) from the old factory and it too is ‘off’ but Dr Knafo keeps saying it’s fine and the complaints are only about the tablets made in the new factory. I have been emailing him for several weeks now about it and have a thread of 14 emails with him and am getting nowhere. What can we do about it??

I’ve had two batches. One was 13C06 expiry 03/2016; and the other was LS03072A, expiry date 03/2016 – I had terrible, instant reactions to both after only one tablet of each. Interesting to see that the problem may have started prior to switching to a new manufacturing location.

Actually, I have to correct the Lot# LS0307A2, the expiry date was October 2016 and not 03/2016..

I have been feeling worse and worse for months with many of the old hypo symptoms returning. I found this site after looking up Erfa availability since it was so hard to come by last December. But now my symptoms are back….8# weight gain in the last month, hair falling out, sluggish, no desire to do much of anything but sleep and yawn.

I checked my bottles and I have 60 mg of the LF3140A batch and it comes from CanadaDrugs. I do not order from them and never have. I have more from LF3141A…also CanadaDrugs. Another one is from Prairie Rx and is 12D261. The tabs all have ECI 60 on them. They have no “thyroid” smell like the other ones when opening the bottle and smelling the contents. They aren’t powdery, but like concrete (I split them). All the latest pills look the same. I emailed Dr. Knafo just now before posting this. I was part of the fiasco with the Forest Labs/Armour reformulation, and now this. Why do these companies want to make us sick. Don’t they know that cellulose/Avicel, whatever they want to call their hypoallergenic filler is harmful to us and doesn’t allow us to assimilate the hormone! Makes me crazy! (but I’m too tired to scream!)

Promise to post any updates that I receive from Dr. Knafo. As yet, nothing really offered. Will be doing labs in next few days after trying to hang with this med for about a month now.
Everyone, please continue to email Dr. Knafo and perhaps Mary Shomon as well so that this issue does not die down.
And even more importantly, if you find out anything, PLEASE let us all know.

Like Angie, I wrote Dr. Knafo and today received a response from him.

He asked if I had done any labs lately, and I wrote him back to tell him that the plan is for me to have blood drawn tomorrow or Friday and that I would get the results back to him when I received them next week.

My testing is very accurate for comparison as I always take 1/2 of my daily dose in the morning and have blood drawn at the 4.5 hour mark after taking it. That way I have the “peak” amount for the FT3 test in my blood, and it will always be the same timing from test to test.

My free t3 and free t4 is low normal, it is usually high normal. I received a new order and started feeling better. DR. Knafo contacted me and asked for my lab results today. My new order is from the canadian pharmacy. My hair is still shedding, bloat has gone away and my cycle returned.

I have a problematic jar of ERFA made at the old factory, lot number 13C06 expiry 03/2016, and I’ve had a long email conversation with Dr Knafo which led to him telling me that I was the only person complaining about any from the old factory (which I know I’m not) and asking if I’d seen my GP and what my blood tests were like.
But today I received a different email, obviously sent to a lot of different people. It is entitled “Important information regarding ERFA Thyroid” and says that they are investigating the complaints and that to proceed they’d like me/everyone to send details of the lot number, expiry date, strength and size of tablet and pharmacy from which they were obtained. I hope everyone else also got one of these emails!

Anne…I received the same email from Dr. Knafo…..wonder how many it was sent out to. I got it because I wrote him with the link that was provided above.

Like you, I have been feeling this way for a couple months, and so mine are “old” pills with expirations of spring of 2015. I haven’t even touched the bottles with the 2016 expirations which were acquired recently, but the pills look the same.

The last bottle of 100 I took is in the trash and long gone, so can’t report that lot number, but the expiration would be earlier than the one I’m using now. So, mine are also from the old factory.

I had my blood tests done yesterday, so I await the results and let you all know what is going on with them. I also had RT3 checked as that is another possibility, and I wanted to rule it out, or else start treatment for it (been there/done that about 5 years ago — interesting enough, it was when Armour reformulated as I recall…coincidence?).

I have Hashiomotos with no thyroid function so I have been taking a full replacement dose of ERFA for some time. There is indeed something very wrong with these pills in recent months of 2014. They do not have enough thyroid hormone in them and they appear to contain some foreign chemical that irritates the stomach and causes cramps. I have been on full thyroid replacement for 20+ years and am very sensitive to changes because I take a full replacement dosage. ERFA has some serious problems and its clearly the poor quality control in the new Spanish plant that is making these faulty tablets. I have switched back to synthetic until I can get a new supply of Nature-throid. Nature-throid has never had any formulation issues in its history so best bet in my opinion. Stop taking ERFA and switch to any other brand. ERFA has serious problems.
