As many parts of the nation are baking under a sizzling heatwave with unusually high, 100 degree-plus temperatures, everyone's focus is on keeping cool. But one overlooked danger of this kind of summer heatwave -- not to mention the related issues of lack of air conditioning in some areas, and power outages -- is the risk that extreme heat poses to our prescription medications.

If you take any prescription drug -- including the popular levothyroxine thyroid drugs like Synthroid -- you need to be aware that storage and shipment at high temperatures can quickly degrade the potency and stability of many medications. That means that the heat can be a danger to many medications that are being shipped by mail or truck, that are sitting in hot cars or mailboxes during pickup, or are being stored in places without air conditioning.
