An Update on Natural Desiccated Thyroid Drugs: Where We Are as of March 2010

Follow me on:

If you go to your local pharmacy to get your prescription for Armour or Nature-Throid filled, will you be turned away? As of early March, 2010, the situation is still in flux regarding natural desiccated thyroid drugs. I had a chance to speak with Dai Jinn, Chief Pharmacist at RLC Labs, the maker of Nature-Throid, to get the latest from him regarding Nature-Throid's status. And you'll find that information, and information on the availability of Armour Thyroid, Erfa Thyroid and compounded natural desiccated thyroid drugs, and the latest on FDA plans for regulation of these drugs, in my new article.

Thank you Mary for this update!!! It is encouraging to finally get some kind of statement regarding the shortage from the FDA and Forest Labs. I was quite surprised two weeks ago when I was picking up medicine for my husband and thought I would ask if they had any Armour Thyroid in stock (expecting the usual no) and they did!!!!!! It made my day!!!

Just curious, is there a way that Canada’s Erfa could officially sell their desiccated “Thyroid” in the US?

The comment from Forrest Labs seems just like the comment that was there a month or 2 ago. My problem is that Forrest is not making the 90 mg at this time. I am so sick of cutting and chopping up grain tablets into halves and QUARTERS that I could scream. Forrest is the only thyroid maker that produces the 90mg/1 1/2 grain tablets. I’d like to see them put some effort into returning these sizes to the market

Have they reformulated Armour? I’ve been reading comments of side effects because they aren’t using what they used before.

Armour is worse now than it ever was, in my opinion. My pharmacy has plenty 60’s on hand, so I went back to it.(I take 90’s) I have never been so sick from thyroid meds as with this “new” stuff. After using Major brand and Nature-Throid, which also made me sick, but to a lesser degree, I now have to find a compounding pharmacy. I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!!

I have been on armour for ten yrs. and felt wonderful. Now on the refolulated I feel terrible. I went on natureroid I do feel better. They can’t fool around anymore to many peopl are getting sick. They do not care. All they care about is the money… Thanks for listening. Diane
