Dr. Keith Berndtson's Shares His Approach to the Natural Desiccated Thyroid Shortage

Keith Berndtson, MD has shared a terrific post in the Thyroid Forum, explaining his proactive, patient-oriented approach to helping his thyroid patients on natural natural desiccated thyroid drugs like Armour Thyroid or Nature-Throid weather the shortage with a minimum of disruption and good information. Dr. Berndtson has put together a letter (and he has shared the full letter the forum) that he is proactively faxing to his patients' pharmacies, and the letter is given to his patients who usually take natural desiccated thyroid drugs like Armour Thyroid or Nature-Throid and go to get their prescriptions refilled. Since his patients are unable to fill their prescriptions for natural thyroid drugs, Dr. Berndtson's letter explains why he needs to switch them to levothyroxine plus Cytomel, and the conversion ratio he has used. He also provides a thyroid symptom log -- and he was gracious enough to include it at the forum so patients can download it -- to help track the signs or symptoms of not enough or of too much thyroid medication. This is incredibly useful information that patients may want to share with their doctors, and an example of a provider who is doing his best to keep his patients informed, and help them weather the shortage and stay informed!

You can highlight the text of the letter on the screen, hit Ctrl C on your keyboard, open a blank document in Word and hit Ctrl P to paste it in there. Then you can print it.

I am very lactose intolerant so must take pure thyroid tabs as I have no thyroid glands. Armour thyroid tabs are the only medication that is lactose free that I can take. I hope if they change the formula that this lactose free tabs will continue.
