Why Defense Contractors Want to Put Your Thyroid in Danger

Thursday June 25, 2009
Defense contractors are lobbying the White House quite aggressively, to prevent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from tightening a health advisory for perchlorate. Perchlorate is a by-product of rocket-fuel production that is contaminating water and food supplies around the nation, and is considered a health hazard due to its ability to impair thyroid function, among other health effects. Perchlorate contamination of drinking water has been documented in at least 35 states and the District of Columbia.

You can read all about the latest lobbying effort in this New York Times article.

As Larry Ladd, nation's leading voice against perchlorate, said over on my Facebook page, "White House urged not to rush perchlorate regulation...the Pentagon argues the time is not right until Mary Shomon is a great grandmother."

Larry's right. The defense contractors have a clear interest in delaying and prolonging any tightening up of perchlorate regulations. The DOD and their defense contractors are, after all, the ones who caused all the contamination, and who will get stuck with the lion's share of the cleanup costs. Meanwhile, Americans continue to get exposed to increasing amounts of perchlorate, thyroid disease is on the rise, and experts wonder why.

Find out more about the whole perchlorate debacle, and why you don't want the defense contractors' lobbying to succeed...

As always, a great newsletter Mary – glad I clicked through to this scary article.

Is bottled water better? I have heard some bad things about the plastics used. Maybe I should stick with Diet Coke or does aspartame wreak thyroid havoc on us, too?

Interesting to say the least…ALARMING to my community! Hashimoto’s Disease for 10+ years. My Endo says Thyroid Disease is overly represented in our area. Fl’s Space Coast! We probably drink and breathe rocket fuel for breakfast. :( -

Hi LA Wolfe, I have heard that the pthylates (sp) from plastic bottles can leech into the water particularlyu over long periods when it it left in the heat. I always use glass bottles. Everyone is different but aspartame is an absolute no-no for me. I will lterally read the label of every drink I buy to make sure it is not in it.

Not to mention what Fluoride does to your thyroid. It used to be the treatment for hyperthyroidism… Why do we constantly have to fight for our health?

I lived 3 years in Mexico where you never-ever touch tap water. I was complaining at first, but I kept the habit. Only purified water now for cooking and drinking.
