2009 Thyroid Awareness Month Campaigns Kick Off

Two new campaigns have been launched to mark January 2009's Thyroid Awareness Month. With an estimated 60 million Americans suffering from thyroid disease, and the majority not yet even diagnosed, increasing the awareness of thyroid problems has never been more important. In the past year, even Oprah Winfrey revealed that even she had to see four doctors and gain 40 pounds before finally getting her own thyroid diagnosis.
To help promote awareness of thyroid disease, I've put put together the Check Your Neck, Change Your Life Thyroid Awareness Month 2009 campaign. The Check Your Neck, Change Your Life Campaign includes a free e-book guide to thyroid symptoms, disorders, and treatments. Get information on the Check Your Neck, Change Your Life campaign and the free ebook.
For their efforts this January, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) have recruited model Kim Alexis, who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism several years ago. Alexis is featured in a new video public service announcement (PSA) produced by AACE. You can view the thyroid PSA on Youtube.
They've also put together some of their web-based reference information, added an interview with Alexis, and put it together in a magazine they call Power of Prevention, the Magazine. You can download a free copy of the Thyroid Awareness Month edition of the magazine , in PDF format.
More Power of Prevention information is available at their website, www.powerofprevention.com.

I posted this video to my facebook page to tell my friends - not jsut how this has affected me (I have Hashimoto’s) but how they may be impacted too and to get it checked out and included a link to Mary’s about.com web page for more info! Get the word out!
It is amazing what the thyroid controls… Learning about Graves disease has been an interesting and eye opening experience. Living with it can be just as challenging. Great article about the importance of check ups and being aware about thyroid problems.
Treating Graves Disease
Hi: I am a 74 yr. old female…. and had my thyroid removed when I was in my 20’s. I had the same Dr. for over 30 years — and never had any problems. Having to move away… the new Dr. just never seemed to have the knowledge about ‘thyroids’. Hence I’ve not been accurately treated, and of course that’s not good. I had requested an appt. with a Endo doctor… but waited over 7 months. When I finally got to see the Endo…. my whole medication regime was changed. I have been on her ‘presc’ for several months — and the present results are showing improvement. However the Endo doctor explains — that not being ‘medicated’ correctly for so long, it will now take some time to get me back on ‘normal’.
I had communicated with Mary Shomon — and she was just great — gave me some excellent information. I also purchased her book — and it is superbly informative. Sure would love to be able to be in an area where Mary may appear in Public Info’s — to be able to meet her — would be a dream come true.
I’ve told my new Endo doctor about ‘Mary’ — and she is aware of Ms. Shomon’s contribution to us all.
So… I’ll continue with Mary’s book… and do my very best to absorb the information carefully… and accurately.
Good wishes to everyone who’s ‘travelling in the same thyroid boat’
