I have Graves Disease and went through one RAI treatment that didn’t work. Now they want me to do another. I lost hair and my feet peeled. The docs are stumped at the feet peeling. They say that the RAI didn’t cause me to lose hair. I say bunk on that. It did. They said it was due to my illness. After the treatment when I washed my hair and combed it, my hair fell out in clumbs. My comb would be full of hair and this didn’t occur until my RAI. I can’t take the thyroid meds because I get a rash which is very uncomfortable. So right now I am on hold and waiting to go through another RAI treatment. This illness has caused me to lose sleep, I weigh 83 lbs. Everything I eat goes nowhere on my body. DO I GIVE UP???
will someone please help with this. I feel so all alone, my family can’t understand why I act the way I do. I wished someone else would be able to help me with this. I am in a nightmare and can’t wake up.
I say find another doctor. It took me several doctors. I finally found a wonderful doctor in Springfield IL, Dr. Dave Wright. He is an immunologist/allergist, but I didn’t care. He found the problem. And you are right, people don’t understand. I lost friends and my family was at their wits end. Don’t give up hope. You can count on yourself and that is what is most important. There is another wonderful doctor. Dr. Elizabeth Vliet. She is in Arizona and Texas. http://www.herplace.com. Keep trying. Only you can be your health advocate. When it comes down to it, doctors don’t care that much. Read and educate yourself. Don’t take one or two doctors word for it. You deserve to feel well. Take care and don’t give up.
I agree, keep looking, seek another opinion. I have Grave’s Disease for 2.5 yrs. now and Type I Diabetes. I took Tapazole for about 2 years and it would make my labs normal, but without knowing it, it would drop to hypothyroid and I felt awful all the time as though my thyroid was low all the time. Hair loss is common with hyperthyroid and I was told when I chose to opt for radio-iodine that the procedure could make the thyroid react even more before it would finally quit altogether. Maybe you had a dosage issue w/the Tapazole? If that is the med that you are saying gave you a rash? I think because I took it for a good 2 yrs. that I may have started off at a lower level when they did the iodine procedure. But, as a type I Diabetic I don’t know that I would opt for the iodine a 2nd time – I might choose to pursue surgery; which I was under the impression is an option as well – I had assorted pain in my finger tips and a variety of muscle cramps after the iodine and it took almost a good 3 months before my thyroid quit – but, because of the fact, that I have had diabetes for 35 years I am just not sure how well I would survive nuerologically, the radioactive iodine procedure again. But, definately if you weigh 80 something pounds I would do something immediately.
