Jim Lowrance: A Fellow Thyroid Patient Advocate
Tuesday October 14, 2008
Jim Lowrance, a dedicated patient advocate and the thyroid editor over at Bella Online's Thyroid Health site, puts out a series of regular columns on thyroid disease, as well as book reviews. It's a great site to bookmark, and I especially appreciate Jim's compassionate view of his fellow patients. (It's also nice to see a male patient perspective out there -- usually the only men we hear from are the docs!)
Here are links to Jim's reviews of my books:

it seems I am extremely allergic to levothyroxine and cannot find any info online on this subject. I have hypothyroidism. Do you have any info on this problem? Changing to a more expensive medication would be a pain…
john,
You might consider checking with Wal-Mart and Walgreen’s pharmacies to see if any major brand thyroid medications are on their reduced price programs. If you find one listed that’s affordable and can participate it’s then a matter of asking your Dr. to place you on a trial of a different one to see if you react to it as an allergen like your previous brand. If you’re sensitive to medications, it may take a trial of several over time to find one you can tolerate. You might also consider Armour thyroid brand which is very affordable as long as you don’t have an allergy or intolerance to porcine (pig/pork products).
