New York Times Talks Thyroid -- Oprah's Thyroid Club
Friday October 19, 2007
New York Times writer and health blogger Tara Parker-Pope has focused a blog post from her "Well" blog on the topic of what she calls "Oprah’s Thyroid Club."
Pope, who focused on some of my coverage of Oprah's condition, and links to a number of resources online regarding thyroid disease, says "the ultimate celebrity endorsement from Oprah Winfrey may finally give thyroid problems the respect they deserve." Let's hope she's right!

I was diagnoised with Hypo thryroid disease during my regular gyn visit. My Gyn gave me a referrel to a endocronologist at which time I was put on 75mg of synthroid. I experienced many of the symptoms including, hair loss, brittle nails, fatigue, and heavy menses, and weight gain. I took the medication as prescribed for the first 4 months, I felt better and stopped for two months. My health declined, I ended up having to have oblation surgery to control the menses, I gained 20lbs despite trying to lose weight, my hair and nails were course and brittle, no energy, easily aggitated, no sex drive, neck pain, and the list goes on. At this point, I have been reading everything I can on hypothyroid, my doctor increased my meds to 100 mgs plus 200mgs once a week. I am adding B and C suppliments to my diet; exercising, and eating foods that increase matabolism; I am already starting to feel better. I tried the “do nothing approach” and found I put my health in further jeopardy. It was irresponsible. My doctor said that there is no medical way inwhich to fix the thryroid once it is broke other than by taking medication that helps build the hormone; he said I should expect to be taking this little pill the rest of my life.
