Wednesday September 26, 2007
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given final approval to Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories for an "Abbreviated New Drug Application" (ANDA) for a generic version of the drug methimazole. The company has received approval to manufacture 5 mg and 10 mg methimazole tablets. Methimazole is an antithyroid drug used to treat hyperthyroidism -- an overactive thyroid.

I had the opportunity to try methimazole and found that I am very alergic to it. After one dose I began to throw up. After day two I was throwing up with a rash developming across my chest. I notified my Endo who told me to stop the meds. I will be having a total thyroidectomy on October 23rd.

I had half my thyroid removed 2 years ago. Since then I have lost all my energy and ambition. Would methimazole help me? I have to see my doctor soon for test results.

I was diagnosed with an overactive Thyroid 1 month ago, there has been no reaction to the drug Neo Mercazole, taking 2 tabs 2 times a day. How long do these drugs take to actually kick in and effect thr thyroid?

I was also on methimazole a few weeks ago. It worked great for a fews days until it gave me a rash and hives. I have since switched to Propylthiour. It’s only been two weeks so I won’t know the verdict for a couple more weeks. I am hyperthyroid and my energy level has gone down to 30-40% of normal in the past few months. It’s extremely frustrating. This site and books on Amazon have been helpful.

I have been on methimazole – Tapasole brand and on a generic for approx 2 + years. It never made me sick. My energy level was low even with being hyperthyroid before placed on this med. My TSH was still getting extremely low even with having a right thyroidectomy. One of the side effects of this medication is on your liver which my doc has always monitored. My Liver numbers have always been on the high side of norm on this med – which is no good for anyone. Its time to remove the rest of my thyroid. Now I get to be hypo – to me methimazole is only a temporary fix.
