Having Thyroid Surgery? Cosmetic Surgery Techniques May Give Better Results

By July 10, 2007

If you are having thyroid surgery, you may want the surgeon to use cosmetic surgery techniques to achieve the best results. This is according to the Medical College of Georgia, which has released the results of an analysis conducted by Dr. David Terris, chairman of the college's Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Terris is known for developing minimally invasive surgical techniques to reduce the size of incisions in thyroid and neck surgery.

Some of the techniques Dr. Terris recommends include:

  • Having a patient sit or stand while the physician marks the incision sites. This helps blend the incision into the natural creases of the body, minimizing the visibility of scars
  • Trimming of edges at the incision sites, to minimize fraying of the edges
  • Using surgical glues instead of sutures, which, according to Dr. Terris, eliminates "railroad tracking"
  • Minimizing trauma to surrounding skin
  • Minimizing use of drains
You can read more about Dr. Terris' techniques and recommendations online.

I have recently had to have scar revision on my thyroidectomy scar to avoid having to wear a choker all the time. You would think surgeons would go that extra mile to make it look at least presentable. It cost an extra 1500 just to get his botched job fixed
