Thyroid Drugs: Price Comparison for June 2007

Sunday June 17, 2007
Periodically, I check in at Drugstore.com to see what the going prices are for various thyroid drugs. Here are the results, as of June 18, 2007. (Note: these are retail prices, and do not reflect insurance co-pays or other offsets.) Also, some retailers, such as Walmart, make generic drugs -- including generic levothyroxine -- available for a flat rate of $4.00 per prescription for a one month supply. (But before you agree to generics, you should read my article on the safety of generic levothyroxine.) Here is the Drugstore.com pricing:

Hmm…I pay (co-pay) $6 a month for levothyroxin (gneric) and get different brands here and there (Mylan and Sanders, etc). Interesting!!

My costs are double for 88mcg through my health insurance plan — $30/30tabs synthroid, $20/30tabs generic. I wonder what retail is…

(5) Karen says:

I pay $26.60 for a 90 day supply of a generic Levothyroxine – 112MCG Lan manufactured by Lannett. Fortunately my Pharmacy was abel to insure a consistnt supply of the same generic each time. This particular one has been the most effective.

(6) Carole says:

I pay $16.85 for a 30-day supply of Synthroid (100 mcg) at Walgreen’s and that’s with my insurance. Walgreen’s sells this prescription, without insurance for $26.00. I called another local pharmacy that’s not a national chain, and it sells the same prescription, without insurance, for $21.25. The pharmacist said it cost him $13.25 to buy the drugs and sells it for $21.25. I suppose people in Louisiana are just being ripped off by the everyone!

(7) Judi says:

I pay $54.50 at Costco for a 90-day supply of 125 mcg of synthroid (not the generic). Unfortunately our insurance doesn’t cover any of the cost for synthroid.

(8) S. Cobb says:

I use Armour. Since Kaiser Permanente does not cover Armour (they cover just the syns and generics of syns), they special order armour for me and charge me approximate $18.00 for each prescription. (I take .60 and half of .90 each day — 2 precsriptions — $36.00). I recently had both prescriptions filled for 14 days (14 pills of .60 and 7 of .90) and was charge $17.00 for the .60 and $16.95 for the .90. I contacted a pharmacy around the corner from where I work and they advised I could get 100 .60’s for approximately $30.00. It’s not rocket science — I won’t order armour from Kaiser any longer and am making arrangements to have the presciptions transferred to the pharmacy around the corner.
