Some of the latest thyroid research findings...
- Prematurity/Thyroid Link: Some children born prematurely are at higher risk of thyroid imbalances later in life. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Vol. 92, No. 1 155-159
- Treating Subclinical Hyperthyroidism: Doctor recommends that subclinical (low-level) hyperthyroidism -- where free T4 and T3 are normal, but TSH is low -- be treated in older individuals with TSH below 0.1, and also in certain high-risk patients (i.e., people with heart risks) even when the TSH level is between 0.1 and the lower limit of the normal range 0.3/0.4. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 92, No. 1 3-9.
- Cigarettes and Thyroid Eye Disease: Researchers have a new explanation as to how and why cigarette smoking is a risk factor for developing thyroid eye disease, also known as thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 92, No. 1 59-64
- Passive Smoking and the Thyroid: Research reports that just one hour of passive smoking -- i.e., levels you might inhale second-hand at a bar/restaurant -- causes significant increases in metabolism and thyroid hormone levels. The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol. 92, No. 1 208-211
