Is Alvidar -- The Herbal Supplement That Calls Itself a Thyroid and Weight Loss "Treatment" -- Actually a Scam?

Wednesday June 14, 2006
Everywhere you look on the web for information about thyroid disease, you'll find ads for and links to Alvidar, an expensive herbal supplement marketed by a company called Selmedica. Sales and affiliate sites, Google ads, popups, and links aggressively promote Alvidar as a remedy or treatment for an underactive thyroid -- hypothyroidism. Alvidar's sales pitch also claims that it can help deal with weight gained due to an underactive thyroid. But are these promotional claims true? What's actually IN Alvidar? Can it help your thyroid? Is it possible that it could actually make you worse? Is Alvidar really a scam?

To be honest I think all weight loss supplements touted in the media are scams. In my experience with Hashimoto’s disease, my weight gain happened because of untreated hypothyroidism even with healthy diet and exercise and activity. After successful treatment I picked up where I left off with my activity once I got my energy back even without the diet and still lost weight. So far I lost 25 of the extra pounds I gain due to untreated hypothyroidism without intensive exercise and crappy diet. Now that I am making the healthy adjustments I would love to see what weight loss and healthy feelings will happen now after 2 years of waiting for this positive change with treatment.

Hi, I was taking synthroid for years because I have Hashimoto’s. It never seemed to work for me. I still never felt normal. My mom who happens to be an herbal freak had me try Kelp ( a natural herb) that was 8 years ago and I will never take anything else for my thyroid again. The kelp helped me. I lost 30 pounds and regained my energy. Give it a try it’s cheap enough and natural so it can’t hurt you.

Hello!! I am 26 years old and have been struggling with my Hypothyriodism for 3 years. I have gained a total of 75 pounds and it has just been a nightmare. I just really wish that there was something out there to help me feel like me again. I am so tired of being over weight and nothing working for me. I am taking Levoxyl 150mg everyday and my levels are super low still and I am just at my wits end. It just would have been nice for once to see something out there that would help people and not hurt them!
