Film critic Roger Ebert, host of the nationally syndicated film review show "Ebert & Roeper," is mounting his fourth battle against cancer since 2002, and will be undergoing surgery for salivary cancer. This was reported by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Feder on Thursday June 1, 2006. The Sun-Times reported that Ebert told Feder, " It's not life threatening, and I expect to make a full recovery." Ebert had thyroid cancer in 2002, and since that time, has had two surgeries for salivary cancer. As reported this week, thyroid cancer patients face a 30% increased increased risk of developing a second primary cancer, including salivary cancer. (Photo: Chicago Sun-Times)

I think that if today’s thyroid
replacement drugs were better, like Old
Synthroid was for me before 1982, then
Mr. Ebert most likely wouldn’t be
battling cancer, yet again.
Thyroid drugs certainly help control
how your cells behave themselves, and
if such drugs were truly doing their
jobs, then it’d make sense that cancer
shouldn’t come back.
I’m sure Mr. Ebert’s thyroid lab
levels have come out perfectly fine,
but that still doesn’t mean his
replacement drug is really getting into
all the cells and doing the job it should.
I know that’s the case with me, and
with so many other members of our
thyroid forum. It’s beyond frustrating.
