Could You Be Overmedicated on Thyroid Drugs?

Thursday May 18, 2006
If you are taking a thyroid hormone replacement drug -- Synthroid, Levoxyl, Armour, or Thyrolar, for example -- luckily, there aren't many risks or side effects associated with these drugs. The most common risk or side effect of these drugs, however, is overmedication. Could you be overmedicated? Could fatigue, aches and pains, and yes, even weight GAIN, be symptoms of overmedication? Find out more now in this article, as well as the accompanying Overmedication Checklist

Thanks for writing about this. I was undermedicated for years, so that when I became overmedicated, I naturally assumed that I was still undermedicated. [The symptoms are often similar.] I developed terrible insomnia, headaches and a feeling of total stress. I think perhaps that the change in formulation of the meds, mandated by FDA, contributed to my overmedication, but who really knows. I am glad that my doctor caught this and dialed back my meds. Now that I am balanced again, I am amazed that I went so long overmedicated. Still, I am now dieting and losing lots of weight, and find I have to go back for blood tests every ten pounds or so to keep from being overmedicated again.

(2) Joann Tharp says:

After years of insomnia, nightmares, hyperactive actions. When I ceased taking snythroid the insomnia and hyper ceased. I found the ingredients in synthroid on internet. One ingredient was acacia which contains natural salicylate (according to The Feingold Program}which I believe I’m sensitive to.

How would I know when I’m hyper even in spurts? My doc carefully monitors my T4 and T3 levels and how I feel along with my pulse to make sure that I am not over medicated especially since I take Armour Thyroid. Plus, I know that having Hashimoto’s disease will make me hyper from time to time whether I take my meds or not. The hyper periods, even tho not as frequent as they used to be, still pop up from time to time and can change daily depending upon what that one hot nodule decides on what it wants to do. How can I reach balance or close to a balance?
