Fifth Annual New England Workshop for Thyroid Cancer Survivors, April 22, 2006 in Boston

Thyroid cancer patient advocate and educator Ric Blake has shared that on April 22, the fifth annual New England regional workshop for thyroid cancer survivors will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the O'Keefe Auditorium at Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit Street, Boston, MA. The workshop is FREE to thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. This workshop is organized by the Boston affiliate group of the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association (ThyCa). In the morning, speakers' topics will include: the basics of thyroid cancer and follow-up care and a discussion of the types of thyroid cancer. Afternoon sessions will review the role of ultrasound in the diagnosis and follow-up monitoring of thyroid cancer. Advance registration is not required. The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. with registration, a continental breakfast and an opportunity for survivors with this rare cancer to meet informally with other survivors. The morning program includes:

10:00 a.m. -- William C. Faquin, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and pathologist at Massachusetts General Hospital will discuss the cytopathology of thyroid cancer; (understanding the basic types of thyroid cancer)

11:15 a.m. -- Stephanie L. Lee, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Director of Endocrine Clinics at Boston Medical Center will present an overview of the management and follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer 2:15 p.m. -- Elizabeth N. Pearce, M.D., M.Sc. Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and an Endocrinologist at Boston Medical Center will discuss the Uses of the ultrasound in the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid cancer.

Conference organizers are committed to helping other survivors because thyroid cancer is a disease that impacts survivors every day from the time of diagnosis through the rest of their lives. They must learn to cope with a strict regimen of daily medications, periodic tests and treatments that can significantly affect the quality of their lives.

ThyCa'’s regional workshops are just part of the free resources the non-profit volunteer organization has created to help survivors around the world. In addition to annual regional workshops in New England, volunteers facilitate local support groups in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
