Increased Heart and Stroke Risk with Treated Hypothyroidism
Wednesday February 1, 2006
Researchers studied the mortality rates and vascular problems in a population of people with thyroid conditions. Interestingly, while the mortality rates for treated thyroid patients were not increased, there was an increase in non-fatal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease in patients with treated hypothyroidism. Cardiovascular disease events were increased in those with previous hyperthyroidism. The reasons
behind the increased risks of non-fatal heart disease and stroke in patients with apparently stabilised thyroid disease need further research, according to the study authors.Source: RWV Flynn et. al. "Mortality and vascular outcomes in the thyroid population" Endocrine Abstracts (2005) 10 OC11
